Rock Me

Summer Michelle’s dream is to become a singer and she is getting a big break. It is down to two singers who will be the opening act for a big pop star, but then threats start to happen. Summer will be told that she will be given a bodyguard and it is none other than her old bodyguard, the man that she had an affair with four years ago. She hopes that they can get a second chance but will have to get Ben’s trust again.

Ben Hollander had been fired from his last job because he had been caught having an affair with a contestant. Now four years later he will be guarding her once again but he will not let it get physical. He doesn’t want to be like his father, though Ben will have to fight hard to resist as Summer will pursue him.

Rock Me is the first book to the series Bodyguard Bad Boys by Carly Phillips. Carly Phillips is an author I can rely on to write a fun and quick novel that has elements of love/lust and some danger in them. This was a great first book to the series. I have a definite soft spot for bodyguard books.

I was apprehensive because I thought Summer was going to be a diva and was the one to turn in Ben but quickly found out that was wrong. Summer was a young woman who just wanted to be a singer. She fell for Ben but things got in their way. I liked that they got a second chance to try again. Ben was definitely guarded but when you find out about his past it was understandable. I thought Ben should have put up a little more of a fight to resist Summer but he didn’t.

The threat was interesting because I had guessed right away the person but then I wasn’t sure as Carly Phillips wasn’t giving away too many hints.

The Cakes of Monte Cristo

Rita Lucero will find a hidden necklace that was located in the bakery thanks to a new employee. She will be delighted with the find but as she learns more about the necklace Rita wonders if it is indeed cursed.

The Cakes of Monte Cristo is the sixth book to the series A Piece of Cake Mystery by Jacklyn Brady. I really liked this book, I got into the story right away. The mystery of the ruby necklace intrigued me. You wondered what family it truly belonged to and why was it hidden.

Rita is still stressed and jumping to conclusions but she seems a little less stressed. Though she is as curious as ever and stubborn as she does not believe everyone’s warning about the necklace. To be honest I don’t know if I would believe but I would be wary. I was happy that Miss Frankie wasn’t so overbearing with things she was having Rita complete. It seemed their relationship was back on track. Rita is still wondering about Ox and his resentment. It really seems that he doesn’t have any but Ox is not what you call a people person.

If this series is finished then I am happy for the most part, but there was no conclusion on to who Rita will be with and that bugs me. Jacklyn Brady is leaving it open. Although maybe this isn’t the end, if it isn’t I think I would be willing to continue reading it.

Under Pressure

under-pressureLeese Phelp had changed his life when he became a bodyguard. Though with his new assignment he will find it difficult to keep his mind on track and not focused on Cat. But as her enemy’s approach them he will make sure to keep Cat safe, whatever the cost.

Catalina “Cat” Nicholson has been looking over her shoulder for a while but she will be getting some help with her own bodyguard. Cat will be grateful for the help but she will not want Leese to be injured because of the men who were after her.

Under Pressure is the first book to the series Body Armor by Lori Foster. So I had been waiting and waiting for this book. I love the two series, SBC Fighters and Ultimate, which had the main characters as professional fighters. Leese was first introduced in the Ultimate series. Now, when I finished the book I certainly liked it but didn’t love it. Lori Foster can write but this time the book just wasn’t my favorite. I really think it was just all happening too fast. I couldn’t feel that solid connection between Leese and Cat even though I was still routing for them.

Leese’s character in the other series was not a great guy, but he was certainly no villain. In this one he was a better man with the job change. With Leese I wanted to know more about him, like his past. We only got a little of it. Cat’s character was a girl who was on the run. She had been in the wrong place at the wrong time. I liked her character but again wanted more about her life. Though I think the mystery of what she had heard kept the intrigue.

I will still be going on with the series as I want to read more about the fighters turned bodyguards.

This Heart of Mine

This Heart of MinePhoenix Fuller had been in prison for seventeen years serving sentence on murder, a murder she never committed. She is back home to help her mother and get to know her son.

Riley Stinson had raised his son at the age of eighteen. He was not looking forward to the mother of his child coming home but he had no way of stopping that interaction.

This Heart of Mine is the eighth book in the series Whiskey Creek by Brenda Novak, which was a good addition to the story.

I thought that the story was entertaining but not my favorite and really it was because of the situation. I found it very annoying that Riley who had loved Phoenix dropped her because of his family and then believed her guilty, but now seventeen years later he was thinking he could have been wrong. He was at first hesitant of her but then his feelings started coming back. I think I wanted Riley to make an effect before then. Now when he is being the parent to Jacob he was a great dad. They seem more like best friends which would make sense since he had been eighteen when Jacob was born. So then there is Phoenix who was ready to forgive, but in a way she is not. She doesn’t want to start anything up with Riley, all she wants is a relationship with her son and to start her business. I liked that she wasn’t begging Riley for another chance. She was a resilient character who would endure anything to make sure she had a chance with her son after all these years. The one thing that I could not quite believe was that she would forgive so easily when it came to Riley. It kind of bugged that she was able to. In a way I wanted her to be with someone else in the story. Now don’t get me wrong I do like my happy ending but at times it just didn’t feel right.

Jacob’s character I really loved. He was a kid who was hesitant to accept his mother but he gave her a chance no matter what others were telling him.

I found the book had a sense of injustice in the end. Well there was justice but I wanted more especially with the two families and how they had treated Phoenix.

I am reading the ninth book next.

Dare to Rock

Dare to RockGrey Kingston had wanted fame and fortune and he got that but now he wanted more. He wanted the girl he had left behind. Grey knew that he had to prove to Avery that they could make it which was hard when his manager and a stalker were making trouble for them.

Avery Dare had loved Grey since high school but knew that she never wanted his lifestyle. With Grey back she has hope but she will be hesitant to trust him. Though Avery will have more to deal with especially when reporters are bringing up her father’s past.

Dare to Rock is the fifth book to Dare to Love series by Carly Phillips. I really loved this book.

Avery’s character was fantastic. She is a bubbly and confident woman when she does her job but on the inside she is still scared and a girl who has panic attacks. I thought how her attacks started was so sad and I hated that it was coming back because of the reporters. Though Avery is strong and she will get through the trouble. Grey’s character was not the cliche rocker which I liked. He cared about his work and wanted what was best for his band mates. I liked that Grey had to work hard to win back Avery.

The problem that occurs are the threats that Avery receives because of some crazy fan of Grey’s. The woman is psychotic and it shows in her behavior. I thought that James gives a good twist on how this woman was so successful with her threats.

Spoiler Alert: I have made mention that I really disliked the father and the way he doesn’t inquire about Avery especially when she is threatened really pissed me off. He tells her that he is annoyed that because of her antics his past is coming back out. Though Avery will finally get through to her father. She gives him a speech that I was hoping one of the kids would give, that let him know how hurtful he has been to them. From how the father was acting towards the end I think there is a chance he will be there for all of his kids.

I am taking a very quick break for the next book but will be back. I will also be reading about the New York Dare’s in the series NY Dare to Love.

Hard Ever After

Hard Ever AfterBecca was ready to get back to work but she was scared, especially because the hospital was where she was attacked. But she wanted to get on with her life and be happy with Nick. Though that happiness will be threatened when she starts to see the man that had hurt her.

Hard Ever After is the final book to the Hard Ink series by Laura Kaye, though there are some spin off books which I can’t wait to read when they are available to check out. I absolutely loved this book. It was really fun going back to Becca and Nick who started the series and that they were going to get their happy ending with everything that had happened. Though the danger wasn’t over quite yet.

I loved how Laura Kaye wrote Becca. She had been a strong woman but when everything calms down its like Becca finally feels the impact of all that had happened. She becomes weaker, sad, and shaken by what had happened. She felt real. Though the fighter in Becca is still there and that will be shown at a critical moment, I was cheering for Becca when that happened. So Nick’s character is reliable and strong but he is also scared. He doesn’t want anything to happen to Becca especially now when they are so close to be truly happy.

Alright, so Laura Kaye wraps up the story in a nice little bow which is sappy and a little too perfect, and I loved it anyways. I loved that all these characters had that happy ending.

So the Raven Riders series who were mentioned in this series will have their own now and the first book just came out in April. There is no doubt in my mind that I will be reading this series. Then there is a continuation of one of the characters from Hard Ink, which is Detective Kyle Vance who helped the men. Well he will have his own story coming out this month. So I wouldn’t have to wait too long.

A Mackenzie Clan Gathering

A Mackenzie Clan GatheringIan Mackenzie and his family were first to arrive at Hart’s home for Christmas time. Ian will be woken abruptly from sleep. Quietly he will investigate only to find burglars in Hart’s home. Ian will be unable to stop the men but he would not rest until he found these men.

A Mackenzie Clan Gathering is a novella in the Mackenzie/Highland Pleaures by Jennifer Ashley. This novella is number 7.5 in the series. I really loved this novella.

I loved that Jennifer Ashely brings back the Mackenzie family for these gatherings. Of course the main focus was Ian and his family which I didn’t mind, as Ian is still one of my favorites. Now this story had some mystery to it with these burglars who had taken the items. You wonder who was the villain but that mystery will only be solved with Ian’s ability to solve problems.

So there was an added part to this story that was interesting. Ashely wrote in Beth’s brother in law who had come to help cure Ian from his madness. I thought it was interesting with how the brother in law was trying to help but I couldn’t help but feel that this was wrong. I loved Ian’s character because of how he was different, and anyways he had been getting better because of Beth and his children.

Well I am done with the series at least for now. There is only one more book to read in the series which will take you to the Mackenzie’s past with Malcolm Mackenzie. I will be reading this book but a little later.
