Sweetest Scoundrel

Sweetest ScoundrelMiss Eve Dinwoody is the bastard sister of Duke of Montgomery. She loved her blackmailing brother but disliked what he did to others. She will soon find herself in charge of her brothers money for Harte’s Folly. Eve could handle the bookkeeping but could not handle the owner, Asa.

Asa Makepeace aka Mr. Harte had been working at the theater since he was seventeen years. Asa had worked hard to make sure his theater was a success and he was close to the new opening, only one problem stood in his way, Eve Dinwoody. Asa knew he could not charm her like his other women, Asa would have to work hard to have Eve trust him.

Sweetest Scoundrel is the ninth book to the Maiden Lane by Elizabeth Hoyt. I really loved this book. I was happy to have Hoyt going back to the family that started the series, the Makepeace’s.

Asa’s character was a man who followed a path he knew that his family didn’t want. He was passionate and good at his job. I really liked him though in the beginning I did think that Asa was an ass to Eve. Though Eve was being cold to him as well. They each had their own reasons for being how they were and it was interesting how Hoyt wrote their back stories, especially Eve’s. You knew that something terrible had happened to her especially with her reaction to certain things that happened at the theater. The truth will be revealed and its pretty bad but things do get better for Eve especially when Asa starts helping. Eve’s character was shy and scared. She cared for those who were close but she was too scared to really take a step out of her own shadow. She will be able to take that step thanks to Asa.

The villain was unknown until close to the end when Hoyt revealed the truth. I felt that with the villain things moved very quickly at the end. I wouldn’t have minded a little more but in the end I got what I wanted with what happened to the villain.

The next book to the Maiden Lane comes out this May. This one will be with Val, the Duke of Montgomery and with Mrs. Crumb. I have a feeling this one will have a lot of secrets and some twist as these are not exactly honest characters. I can’t wait to read their story.

Because You’re Mine

Because You're MineLady Madeline Matthews hatched a plan to get herself out of a marriage to a man who was older than her father. She was set out to ruin herself and knew the perfect man to do the job, Logan Scott.

Logan Scott did not trifle with young unmarried woman. He did not trust woman but there was something about Madeline that made him want to forget his rules.

Because You’re Mine is the second book to Capitol Theatre series by Lisa Kleypas. I really liked this book. Kleypas keeps you entertained with the couple eventually finding love and the little banter back and fourth. I liked that I got to read more with the actors that worked at the Capitol Theatre.

Kleypas writes the character of Madeline to be very entertaining. She is young and naive but she was also a very strong willed girl. Although when facing off with Logan she will find her courage and ache of love die as he does not reciprocate. Kleypas writes Logan sometimes to be a villain in a way. Though the reason for Logan’s anger is because he was betrayed by a woman, as I thought from the previous book, but there was more that was hidden about his life. Logan will be betrayed again and he will have to learn to forgive or ask for support. That support comes from Madeline even though he does not want it, he does but he wouldn’t admit it.

It’s hard to have the hero act like a villain sometimes because that will interfere with the happy ending. Although if there are not problems then the book can get very boring. For me Kleypas does not have that problem as all her heroes or heroines are flawed in someway but will always redeem themselves in the end. The romance reader in me cheers for those moments.

I am off to read another series from Lisa Kleyas which is Wallflowers.

Somewhere I’ll Find You

Somewhere I'll Find YouJulia Wentworth and Damon Savage had one thing in common, they were married to each other and had no desire to be. Their parents had married them off when they were children and as adults neither were wanting to be saddled with a spouse. Circumstances will have Julia and Damon finding each other and will be more shocked when they have feelings for each other. Though each are hesitant where that will lead them.

Somewhere I’ll Find You is the first book to the series Capitol Theatre. I found this book to be very entertaining. I was wondering in the beginning if I would like it. There are sometimes when you love the authors writing but on that particular book it just didn’t give you what you wanted. I thought that was going to be the case with the beginning but then you continue and it became engaging and I wanted to know more.

Julia and Damon were given a disservice with being forced to marry without having their knowledge when they were children. It made them become guarded and hesitant to trust. Neither will want each other in their lives until they meet each other and then they feel the desire. You felt for Julia who did want to be loved by Damon but feared that he would take away the one thing that she treasured. Damon was a bit of a player but you really couldn’t fault him too much. He was likeable but he should’ve made more of an attempt to find Julia, Julia should’ve done the same.

Needless to say there will be that happy ending that you long for, it will just take a lot of time persuading and some mending of hearts. I was interested in Logan Scott and what he was running from. I figured it was a woman who had broken his heart but it seemed even more. The answers will be given in the second/last book of the series which I will be reading next.

Romancing Lady Stone

Romancing Lady StoneLady Cecilia Evangeline Stone is in search of her son who is getting married in a few days. She wouldn’t be there to congratulate her son but to stop the wedding as he was going to marry an actress who was too old for him. Cecilia will have problems along the way in Russia but will be rescued by Mr. Levin.

Konstantin Alexie Levin was on the way to London to collect money that was being given to him. It would be a fresh start but before he could leave he will stop to help a woman. The attraction is instant for Konstantin and he will want nothing more to be with this woman but she will be an aristocrat.

Romancing Lady Stone is a novella to the series School of Gallantry by Delilah Marvelle. Well its been a couple years since I had found my first book by Marvella. The books I have read by this author haven’t been amazing that is until I read this book. I really liked this novella. Maybe it was because it was shorter and more to the point, I am not sure. Well I am sure that I liked the characters of Cecilia and Konstantin. They were a mismatch from the start and with her being a little older it would never do in society. Then there was Konstantin who was a former criminal. I liked him and even though he was 10 years younger than Cecilia he had a maturity that kept up with her. He was good for her as well in a way of letting her spread her wings. I liked that it was a romance that would beat the odds and win because it will, it just might take a little convincing between the both of them with the help of destiny.

I liked Cecilia’s character as she was a mother and was older but in life she hadn’t really lived and Konstantin brings that out in her especially the sexual side. Out of all the books I have read by Marvelle the one spot she always will write well are those intense love scenes. I guess for myself I just couldn’t get into the characters or the plot that was forming in the books. I really didn’t have a problem with the novella and I really did enjoy it.

So since I liked this novella I will have to try out this series School of Gallantry to find out if it is like this novella. That will be coming later as my pile of books hasn’t had the chance to decrease as I keep adding to the pile.

One Naughty Night

One Naughty NightLily St. Claire loves her family and will do what she needs to do to save them. Even when her past starts to show up but she will not be alone as unexpected help will emerge from a rogue whose family had destroyed the St. Claire’s long ago.

Lord Aidan Huntington knew he wanted her the moment he saw her. Aidan searched for the actress and then found her three years later. He will find himself getting closer and will find himself caring and wanting to help her when danger gets too close.

One Naughty Night by Laurel McKee is the first book to the series Scandalous St. Claire’s. I really liked this book. Not only were the characters ones I wanted to know more about, this was a very steamy book. The plot stays true to the title with how Aidan and Lily interact. As they are together whether they touch or not they are always about to burst with lust. They have instant attraction and lust and it is still there three years later. Now the book isn’t all about lust especially as our characters don’t trust each other completely, but there troubles surrounding them. The man in Lily’s past who can only be a vile villain that you want to see destroyed. I loved how there was justice at the end and how St. Claire’s and Huntington’s banned together for a greater purpose.

Scandalous St. Claire series is still new so there is only one other book out which I will want to read to find out what was going to happen with Dominic and Sophie as the grudge is still not over for St. Claire.

“The Perfect Royal Mistress”

I don’t know why but I thought I would try another book by Diane Haeger.  I did like her other book but it just wanted to make me cry, so I hoped that this would not do so.

The story line of “The Perfect Royal Mistress” is about a lowly orange girl, Nell Gywnne trying to survive in this world in the time of 1666.  Her mother has been out of her life with drinking and Rose her sister took to prostitution to help provide food for them.  Nell has tried to keep her witt and strength in this time.

Charles II is king at this time married to Catherine but that doesn’t mean he stays faithful.  He has had many children with his mistresses.  He finds Nell as the lowly orange girl and finds her charming.  She tells him the truth with her witt, and she doesn’t know that he is king.

Nell finds herself being forced into sex by the actor Charles Hart which should have been the worst thing but Nell turns it into something she can use.   With the help of Richard Bell, Nell becomes a star on the stage in comedic plays.  It is at this time King Charles II sees her again and wants to get to know her better.

Nell lets the king and soon they begin their affair.  Nell though is different from all the other woman.  She ignores the other woman and lets him come back to her.  She continues on with her acting and all of London love her along with the King.

Okay so this book didn’t make me cry which was great.  Of course I was very frustrated throughout the book with the King and his commitment level to Nell.  I want them to always be together but he can’t stop with the cheating.  I personally would think that I would send the King packing with all the cheating but Nell is a different woman.  She loves the man and the King.  I wonder in today’s society would woman really be all that forgiving like Nell?  For me I know the answer is no.

What I also liked about this book was that its historical. These characters are real.  I liked how Diane places the facts and intertwines the fiction throughout the pages of the book.  It is also nice to have a little summary about what happens afterwards with Nell.

This book left me smiling more than “The Secret Wife of George IV”.  Over all I loved Nell strength in the book and found the atmosphere in that time fascinating to read.
