Hugh Fitzroy, the Duke of Kyle was on a mission to stop the Lords of Chaos. He will find help from a boy from St. Giles, Alf. Though Hugh will realize quickly that Alf is more than he appears, specifically that Alf is a girl.
Alf has disguised herself as a boy for as long as she could remember. It was easier to get around St. Giles as a boy. But Alf had another secret, she was also the Ghost of St. Giles. Alf will find herself helping Hugh and that interaction will lead her to have feelings for him.
Duke of Pleasure is the eleventh book to the series Maiden Lane by Elizabeth Hoyt. I really loved this book. It has been interesting learning about these vile Lords of Chaos and I loved that the Ghost of St. Giles was a woman.
Hugh’s character to me seemed a little too stuck up in the other books but as I got to know his character I found he was a brave man and committed to his task. Also, that he loved his sons, he just might not be able to show it. Actually Hugh has a problem expressing his feelings no matter what which is evident with how he acts with Alf. Though when push comes to shove Hugh will get it right. Alf’s character was intriguing. She was the one who got the information and she fought to protect those around her. I liked that even when she had to dress up as a lady the real woman was still there and not lost in all the glitz of the ball.
I liked the mystery of the Lords of Chaos. They are the evil guys and they need to be stopped. It looks like they will be here to stay as they will be in the next story. I am wondering who will be the person to stop the group.
I can’t wait to read Duke of Desire which will come out in October of 2017.
Josephine Carlisle is the adopted daughter a baron and because of that circumstance her suitors were limited. Josie cared little for that until she spots a man that has her stopping in her tracks.
Thomas Matteson, Marquess of Chesney, was a spy for the War Office but he had been forced to retire after an attack. Thomas wanted nothing more than to get back to being a spy, and he might get that chance by doing a job. Thomas will jump at the chance but he will find problems with the job especially when it leads him to Josie.
How I Married a Marquess is the third book to the series The Secret Life of Scoundrels by Anna Harrington. I really liked this book. For me I think this one was my favorite and it is mainly because of Josie.
Josie’s character was a surprise. First off she is the adopted daughter of a baron which is a situation I don’t read too much in historical romances. I liked Josie’s spirit. She was independent, knew her own mind, and was determined to do what needed to be done. Now Josie has a secret that leads her into trouble but she does what she needs to do so she can help others. Thomas’s character was broken. He was a spy but that was taken from him when he was injured. I liked that he felt a peace with Josie. Now Thomas is anything but perfect. He does a lot of wrong things before he does the right thing especially when it comes to Josie.
Harringotn will give an epilogue which for me ended the the story perfectly.
Marcus Kane, Lord Chadwick, has been on many missions and wondered if it was time to give it up. Though he will accept the mission that his old friends offers him. Marcus doesn’t like the idea that he will have a partner, but this partner will intrigue him, and everyday he is close to Fantine he wants her more and more.
Fantine (Fanny) Delarive plays a role. Some days she will be known as Rat, a barmaid, or a servant. Her latest role will be playing the lady she should have become. She will help a lord who is trying to change England in a good way but she wouldn’t be alone in her mission. She will have Marcus right at her side.
No Place for a Lady is the first book to the series Regency Rags to Riches by Jade Lee. I really liked this novel.I don’t always like spy stories but this one intrigued me, especially the characters.
Fantine’s character intrigued me right away with her double identity. I liked that she had so many identities she used in order to survive on the streets. For all the hardship I wanted Fantine to give in and just ask for help but you knew that was not her. Her character was very strong when she was faced with hardship but when it came to matters of the heart she is vulnerable. Then there is Marcus who was a lord, but also a spy. He was a little stuck up but that was due to his upbringing. I liked that he changed to become less stressed and that happened because of Fantine.
The mission to save one of the lords was well done. There was some underhanded characters stopping them along with some betrayals and a couple of twists.
Trouble is a combination of two books written by Linda Howard. Midnight Rainbow and Diamond Bay are the first two books from the series Rescues.
Grant Sullivan was on a mission which was to rescue Jane Greer from a pack of ruthless men. He will be annoyed to be on the rescue but will soon find that Jane is more than the empty headed girl he thought she was.
Rachel Jones was shocked to find a man almost dead on the beach and she knew that she had to help him. She will rescue him and trouble quickly follows when mysterious FBI men start asking for Kell Sabin, her mystery man.
I found myself enjoying both of these books. There is a definite theme of rescue which just happened to be the name of the series. Though it’s not just these strong men who were the ones rescuing the woman. The woman play their part and are strong and smart about what needs to be done, sometimes a little impulsive but it helps in the dangerous situation they are placed in.
In each of these books the villains are evil and are desperate to get what they want. One is a microfilm and the other is a person to finish off. The villains are ruthless but the good guys are very good at their job.
The epilogue in the second book showed a happy ending for the two couples so I am guessing their part in the series is over. There are two more books to the series but I have a feeling they might be hard to get to since they were written in the 80’s. I will be on the look out but for now there are always more books from Linda Howard that I can try.
Nell Calder was an ordinary woman who was a wife and mother but she will find herself in a horrendous situation. Her family will be attacked and killed at a party. Nell will survive but barely. She holds on with the hope to get her revenge which is where a man named Tanek who will train her to fight their mutual enemy.
The Ugly Duckling is a novel written by Iris Johansen. This book was a really fantastic thriller that will keep you on your toes until the very end. I have read many books by Johansen and each book that I have read I have loved to read. She is a great storyteller when it comes to suspense thrillers. You get swept up into the story.
So the character of Nell was a loving yet shy and weak housewife. That all changes when she was cut up and left for dead. I liked Nell’s determination that came with this horrific change in her life. She struggles and fights to get stronger, to fight the man that destroyed her life. I liked how Tanek trained her, he did not sugar coat the training and made her fight harder if only to learn to protect herself. Now Tanek was a solider, a man who manipulated and fought for what he wanted. Though he really was a good guy, just hard around the edges. He wanted revenge against the same man which made Nell and Taneck perfect partners.
I thought the idea of her transformation was interesting. When her attack happened it was very damaging to her body and her face was destroyed. She became a beauty which was something she had been told would never happen. Her beauty helped opened doors which brought her closer to her revenge.
Within the book there were plenty of twists where you thought one thing another thing happened it completely changed the situation. Or the person you thought was good turned bad. Johansen kept you guessing, though one thing she made sure happened was for Nell and Tanek to get their revenge.
Miss Calliope Worthington will stumble upon a large house, walk in and help herself to some jewelry. She wasn’t going to take it as she just wanted to try it on. She will be caught by the master of the house and she will be shocked by what he demands.
Mr. Ren Porter caught a woman red handed and instead of kicking her out of his house he tells her to pay him back she would have to spend one night per pearl on the necklace around her neck. Ren is humored by this thought but will be shocked at the next day that she agrees to his demands.
When She Said I Do is the first book to the series Worthington by Celeste Bradley. Bradley is not a new author for me as I have read her before but it has been about two years. The lapse in time is not due to Bradley’s writing as I like her as an author. The problem is I like a lot of authors and there is only so much time I have available to read. That being said I very much enjoyed this story. Think Beauty and the Beast but this is not a G rated, think more x-rated at times at least during those moments Callie and Ren are exploring their desires. It makes sense that this book was going this route as Callie had to give one night to Ren for each pearl from the pearl necklace.
What I liked about this story was that the characters of Callie and Ren were more than they appeared. Ren with his work as a spy and Callie’s view on romance which had stayed hidden from her family. Together they should have crashed but they were able work together, to find that peace as she was his light. There was also the raw desire they made each other feel which helped the situation, and because of Callie’s willingness Ren becomes stronger.
The family was not the ideal one that you would want helping. In fact they really don’t help all that much as they let Callie take the brunt of it. At the core of these family members they are good people, if not misguided, but they did annoy me at times. You wanted to shake them and stop them from anything else that could happen.
Now what would a love story be without your obstacles and villains. Obstacles were clearly Callie’s accidents that kept happening around her. It looked like she was mad but someone was clearly after her. The person after her was pretty clear but there were others that could have been dealing in this mischief that would be the downfall of Callie’s life. Now Callie was a Worthington and now Porter, and she would not go down without a fight.
Towards the end this book talked about a Liar’s Club and as I looked around I found one of Celeste Bradley’s series called Liar’s Club. The workings of spies can sometimes be a tad bit boring for me but I think with how Bradley spins her tales this would be something to try. Not to mention I will have to try out the second book to this Worthington series even though I am hesitant as this family drives me a little crazy.
Violet Winterbottom was sent to Spindle Cove like many other girls before her but not many went to find out if they were expecting a child. Violet gave the one thing she was supposed to give to a husband to the man she loved. Crushed that he left Violet knew to get on with her life. It has now been a year and she was to come back into society but on her last night at Spindle Cove a man will stagger into the ballroom and fall at her feet.
Once Upon a Winter’s Eve is a novella in the Spindle Cove series from Tessa Dare who really can’t go wrong with her books. It seems no matter what I will just keep reading from this author. With her two novellas that I have read I loved them and very quick to read. I read about Diana and Aaron first as I was waiting for this one to come available.
What surprised me with this novella was that there was a lot going on. It was non stop action once you found out that this mystery man was indeed the man that Violet loved. It was interesting as it did not seem like it but he quickly clears up the confusion, that is once they are away from others who would be listening to them. I liked that this dealt with a little espionage which gave a little more action to the book. Violet was a great character as she was very smart and knew many languages which helped her understand the intruder/Christian.
I was wondering how the ending would play out as Christian was a spy and needed to keep his identity intact. I was pleasantly surprised with the ending which lets Christian and Violet have an adventure along with a happy ending.
I can’t wait to read my next book from Tessa Dare. I don’t have anything in mind right now but I know eventually I will get back to the author.
