Persuasion is the one novel that I was not really anticipating to read from Jane Austen.
The book is about a young woman Anne Elliot who had broken off an engagement to a poor officer. Now eight years later that poor officer, Captain Wentworth, is wealthy. Anne regrets letting her family persuade her but she has to live with her consequence.
So, years ago I had tried to watch the movie and it just bore me to death. Although, I have to remember I was ten years old and any movie that wasn’t animated or comical would not hold my attention. Now, before I read the book I decided to watch the movie which was made in 2007 and all I can say was, I was captivated. There was no time in the movie I wanted to fast forward. Sure I wanted to shout at Anne to do what she wanted. To marry the man that she wanted. The ending had me smiling but I had wondered if that ending would ever happen.
After I watched the movie I was very much looking forward to reading the story. I really liked the story but saying that I wonder if I would have liked it if I didn’t watch the movie. By watching the movie before reading the story I was able to follow along when the writing got a little long in certain parts.
I will say that one thing which bugged me was how Anne’s character just did whatever her family had said or requested. Anne was always in the background but no one really noticed her. I wanted Anne to break free of that hold they had on her. Also, her family was just horrible to Anne, but Anne didn’t stop their behavior. Although there was someone, which was Captain Wentworth. I liked that even though he had been hurt by Anne there was still a good man underneath all the hurt. He helped Anne out because he was a kind man which I loved about him. What kept me interested in the story was the interaction of Wentworth and Anne. There were both unhappy yet content to live their lives with how they were living. Though they will get it right, it just takes losing each other again to make them realize how they still feel.
I am reading my last Jane Austen novel, Lady Susan, next.
Cecily Hale has waited for Luke Trenton for four years. Her love never disappeared for this man even though he had changed. Cecily will make sure that Luke knows it is safe for them to be together, that her love for him will never leave.
How to Catch a Wild Viscount is a novella written by Tessa Dare. I liked this book. Although I will have to say it wasn’t in the same category of the Spindle Cove series, which I loved. I thought that the novella could have been given more detail regarding these two characters. A little more back story, though you get the story between them within the novella.
I liked Cecily. At first I wondered if she was just going to be a naive girl but she was a mature woman who knew who she wanted to be with. She had grown up and was compassionate for others around her. Luke was tortured with what he had gone through in the last four years. He had been like a beast when he had to kill others who were out to kill him. He felt that he wasn’t right for Cecily even though he did want her.
There was also a legend that was within the story of a beast that these friends are on the hunt for and that gets Cecily into some trouble. Though she will be rescued by a different kind of beast.
Emma Hart was coming back to Oklahoma for her sisters wedding. Emma was hoping that she might be able to meet up with Jace and try again but then she sees Logan and knows he is the man that she wants.
Lieutenant Colonel Logan Hunt was not looking for love but he was not scared of it. So when he meets Emma at the wedding he will be shocked at the instant attraction they feel together. They each know they will only have a one night stand but when she comes back to visit her sister everything changes.
Two Times as Hot is the second book to the series Oklahoma Nights by Cat Johnson. I thought that this was a great follow up from the first book. In fact I think I liked this a little more than the first book.
Emma is looking for love, is looking for someone to commit to but she has been unlucky in that department. She will follow her sisters lead and have a one night stand with a man, Logan, only things will never be the same after that night. Emma will be getting an unexpected surprise that wouldn’t have her running in fear but fearful of what that might do with her relationship with Logan. Now Logan is a good man. He is not afraid of commitment, just doesn’t think about it. I liked that he starts to change a little when he starts seeing Emma. They are good together, the sexual chemistry is there but they can just talk to each other as well.
The one thing that I didn’t like in the book was right at the end. Well truthfully I liked the impact and the results of the ending I just thought that Logan was a little cheesy at the end of the book.
Alright now I have to say this that I wasn’t really that interested in Tara or Jace. Tara was after Logan even though he was way to old to be with her, and Jace had commitment issues with his ex-girlfriend. I think that they both need some growing up and figure out what they really want in life. I will be reading their story next and hope that they have gotten a little maturity in their book.
Lady Lucy Upton has a sharp tongue and will use it which will make her unappealing to most of the ton. This time she is using it to help her friend discourage a suitor that Cassie does not want, the Duke of Claringdon. But Lucy will find it will take more to discourage him.
Lord Derek Hunt, Duke of Claringdon, has made a promise to a dying friend to marry Lady Cassie. He will do his duty and marry the girl but there will be her friend that keeps getting in his way. She also gets in his head and stays there making him think only of her.
The Unexpected Duchess is the first book to the series Playful Brides by Valerie Bowman. Alright now even though this story was fairly predictable with what was going to happen between Derek and Lucy, also who the sick friend was I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The story just made me smile. I know I will be back to enjoy the sequel of this series and the third when it comes out.
So now back to the first book which was a book I loved reading. I thought the characters were fun. There was some silly characters but it wasn’t that annoying silly which was then fine with me. I loved Lucy and her spirit. She was a firecracker with her attitude and she was not afraid to back down from challenges. There is the softer side which you find out with how she was neglected by her parents which made sense to how she became. Then there is Derek who is all about decisions and his duty. I liked that about him but it made things difficult with how he would get to Lucy.
Bowman makes it happen as this is a romance and she makes sure there is a lot of it in this book. The dynamic between Derek and Lucy is fueled by annoyance which is really just that attraction that is there but they are trying to hide it. As that never works the characters will find themselves in lust and coming to love. I was happy that this did not break Cassie as she had no love for Derek only her Julian.
As the book is finished I want more especially the second book to the series because I really want to read Julian and Cassie’s story and read about their happy ending, which might be hard to do as Julian doesn’t know she loves him. Though I will be waiting because I really want to have the third book available to read.
Gwendoline, Lady Muir, was a widow thanks to a freak accident taking away her husband. Feeling guilty Gwen will live her life with no one at her side as she vowed never to marry again.
Hugo, Lord Trentham, was a solider coming back to a life that is almost foreign to him. He will be instructed that it will be time to find a wife but has no real desire to do so. His thoughts though will turn towards a widow.
The Proposal is the first book to the series Survivor’s Club by Mary Balogh. Now I liked the book but I wasn’t blown away by it. It was something to read and it was good just didn’t get me overly involved with the plot.
What I did like was Hugo was persistent and both of these characters had some sort of tragedies that led them to a more solemn way in the world. They will both heal each others demons that had been plaguing them. Because of that part in the plot I thought the name of the series, Survivor’s Club, was very appropriate.
I will probably try the next book in the series but probably at a later date.
Griffin Reid was back in his hometown once again for his sisters wedding. He will soon find himself staring at his sisters best friend Katie. He knew she was off limit but he went for it. It was supposed to be a one night stand but soon he will find he can’t stop thinking about her.
Kate Evans is a second grade teacher in her hometown. She has the chance to leave home for a year but can’t seem to accept because of fear with leaving her family alone. Kate will soon find another thing stopping her when she sees her childhood crush Griffin is back and her feelings have never changed.
Rumor Has It is the fourth book to Jill Shalvis’s series Animal Magnetism. The nice thing about these books are you can read them easily on their own. A little background is given and you wouldn’t get lost if you just picked up the book. Out of all four books that I have read I have to say I really like this one. They were all good but there was something about Kate and Griffin that had me wanting to read more and more. Kate had a unique situation with taking care of her family which she used as an excuse for not leaving. I liked that she grew stronger in the book and took charge even though it was not easy. Griffin was a war hero and it felt he was in a rut the entire book that is when he wasn’t with Kate. They each fought the attraction but could not keep apart especially as they each took that first step forward.
There is a little surprise that happens at the end that causes a little turmoil but Shalvis makes sure that the situation does not cause permanent damage. There is a perfect happy ending that left me smiling for Kate and Griffin.
There is a girl named Olivia in the book that is mentioned. I wonder if she will be the next one in the series or if Jill Shalvis will end it with the fourth book? Only time will tell but I will keep looking out for book from Shalvis maybe trying out another series other than Lucky Harbor series.
Cecilia Mallory needed to marry to be able to control her money and take care of her brother and the estate. Cecilia imagined her husband to be an elder man and is stricken when she meets a young vibrant man. She will rethink the marriage to her husband but with every touch will send shivers down her spine. She will be distracted as she fears her life is starting to be in danger when accidents keep happening to her.
Viscount Michael Blackthorne was intrigued by the letter to marry his commanders daughter. As he felt he owed his commander Michael agreed. He was speechless six months later to be facing his wife he married by proxy. She was a beautiful woman and not an aged spinster he thought she would be. Michael will want to make this marriage real in all ways as every moment he spends in her company, but soon his mind will be on the accidents that keep happening to Cecilia.
So I once again judged a book by his cover but it wasn’t for the picture only the name of the author. I thought it would be fun to read this author who spells her name as mine. When I was younger everyone of my friends and teachers would always spell my name Gail never Gayle, and I would hardly ever see my name spelled that way. So a few years ago I kept finding my name spelled Gayle of authors for their first or last name. This was the first time I saw Gayle Callen’s book and took in on a whim to read.
Since I had not read the summary page of this book I was pleasantly surprised how much I liked the book. I thought the characters seemed real like the relationship between brother and sister along with the only just meeting husband and wife. Oliver the brother was spoiled and guilt ridden which made his character interesting. You wanted him to grow up but as Callen uncovers the truth about Oliver you cheer for him. Then there is Michael who was very much the solider but who was also just a good man. He had hidden guilt which you can guess. Now Cecilia I really liked as she was a woman on a mission. She got things done and took care of everything. I was intrigued by the fact who would want to hurt this woman. Now the plot was simple as it was mainly about Cecilia doing what she can to help her brother. Callen brings in a sinister part when the accidents start happening. Personally I had no idea who would be plotting to harm or kill Cecilia so Callen did a good job at the surprise. I will definitely revisit Callen for another one of her books.
