Vinegar Girl

vinegar-girlKate Battista is the family member who does everything for her family. She wants out but doesn’t really know how or what she would do when that happened. Kate will be blindsided when her father wants her to marry his coworker, so the coworker can stay in the country.

Vinegar Girl is a novel by Anne Tyler is a modern version of The Taming of the Shrew. First off I liked this book but it was a gradual like. I did not open this book and begin to read loving it. In fact I was wondering what the big deal was about the book. My cousin loved it and I was giving her the benefit of the doubt. I found myself slowing being pulled into the story. It was a story that charmed me and I found myself really enjoying the book as I turned the last page.

Kate’s character was a woman who wanted out of her situation but like a dutiful daughter she did what she needed to do. I liked that Kate had a sarcastic side and she will finally stand up to those around her at least some of the time. Personally I wasn’t really sure if her father’s coworker would be a good match. He seemed a little strange and I didn’t like he was going along with the plan but as the story went on I really ended up liking them as a couple. They balanced each other out.

I thought that the father was hopeless but he was a good man. Then there was Bunny who was a spoiled child and going after whatever she wanted. I really don’t think Bunny learns anything at the end of the book, but I was okay with that as I was just happy Kate and Pyotr got their happy ending.

Nobody’s Baby But Mine

Nobody's Baby But MineDr. Jane Darlington wanted a baby desperately but most of all she wanted her child to be normal. That was why she was looking for a man who was not too smart. She set her sights on Cal Bonner but she will discover that Cal does not follow the typical cliche of jocks.

Nobody’s Baby But Mine is the third book to the series Chicago Stars by Susan Elizabeth Phillips. I can’t get enough of this series. With each book I get lost in the plot and don’t want to stop reading until I reach that last page.

Alright so this book was all about Jane wanting a baby. She was a very smart woman who didn’t have a lot of common sense when it came to getting pregnant. When she tricked Cal I didn’t like it as you knew it wasn’t in her personality to be cruel. When Cal finds out he is furious and I thought he had every right to be mad. What I didn’t like was the amount of anger that was inside him because that led to a desire for revenge. The revenge you knew would not only hurt Jane but also hurt Cal. Now there were other times that I didn’t like Cal which was when he was just too superficial. He wanted the young women because he wanted others to believe he wasn’t getting older.

The relationship they had was troubled pretty much right from the start. There is no real love or even like between them. Jane is the one that will discover that true feelings start to unravel first which made it hard for her when Cal was so cruel to her, not physically but verbally. Again I felt that he was justified because she did trick him but after a while it gets overwhelming. I wanted Cal to get over his anger. Things will get better but there will be a twist that stops everything and has Cal realizing that he will lose Jane if he doesn’t understand what he needs to do.

There is again another story that is being told which is Cal’s parents, Jim and Lynn. They had grown apart without really knowing it and there was years of resentment that was between them, but there was love between them. They went through a journey that was similar to Jane and Cal. It took that journey for Jim and Lynn to find their happiness again. I also liked that Lynn didn’t back down.

I will be reading the fourth book next.

The Countess Conspiracy

The Countess ConspiracyViolet Waterfield, widowed Countess of Cambury, leads a double life. The life that society sees is the Countess of Cambry who follows the rules of society. The other life is one where she is a scientist that has been published, but she could not take the credit as Sebastian Malhuer was the one to pretend it was his work. Though it will all change when Sebastian can’t take it anymore.

The Countess Conspiracy is the third book from the series Brother Sinisters by Courtney Milan. I absolutely loved this book. I will have to say that for me there is no favorite for the series as I have loved each book so far. With this book it centers in on Sebastian and Violet.

I liked Violet. From the previous books I had always thought that she was confident, yet quiet. You get to find out more with her character and I knew it right away the secret that she had been hiding. The secret is of course her being the scientist, not Sebastian like Courtney Milan had written. That secret was found out very early into the book. I was shocked but with how the author writes about radical changes this secret of Violet being the true scientist it makes sense. Violet’s background story was heartbreaking with what she had to endure and you cheered for her to realize that it would be okay to take that risk with Sebastian.

Now Sebastian was a good man but his character was almost comical for he was almost never serious or never taken serious. It was a problem for him that he struggled because he wanted his brother to be proud of him. Both of these characters struggled with finding acceptance with family and their peers. I liked Sebastian as you knew that he truly loved Violet, it wasn’t just seduction. It was actually sweet with how he had loved Violet for most of his life.

It would appeared that they were opposites with Violet’s temperament to stay quiet and out of sight while Sebastian was not scared of making himself known in a crowd, but they were very well matched.

I am reading the fourth book next, The Suffragette Scandal.

Charming the Highlander

Charming the highlanderGrace Sutter was coming home to spread her sisters ashes and to give her sisters baby to the baby’s father. She will come into trouble when the plane she rides in crashes. She will be saved by a stranger who was another passenger, Greylan.

Greylen MacKeage was adjusting to his new life for the last four years all the while searching for the woman that would be his destiny. He will find that woman in Grace Stutter. He will want her the moment they meet and he will have to fight hard to win her hand.

Charming the Highlander is the first book to Pine Creek Highlander series by Janet Chapman. I thought this was a good book. The plot to me felt light and when reading the book I flew through the pages. This series has eight book which I have checked out from my library. I have decided to try out this series which was a long time coming. I have already read one book from this series but it’s been a while. I don’t exactly remember the plot but do remember that it was a series I wanted to read from the beginning.

Grace was a brilliant scientist but will have a tragedy hit her and throw her on a new path. I liked that Grace did not stop, she fought to do what was right. When she meets Greylan there is an immediate response that she has towards him and it only grows and gets pretty lustful. Greylan is a highlander from another time. He is old fashioned as that was the time he had grown up in, which can get a little overbearing when he wants something.

The magic aspect was interesting as it took these great warriors from their land to a modern day world. The magic really didn’t surround the book as I thought it would which was not a problem. I liked that these warriors were in present day and learning how to deal with the twenty first century.

I will be reading Loving the Highlander next.

Girl Least Likely To Marry

Girl Least Likely to MarrySamuel “Tuck” Tucker was seen as a jock foremost but what most did not see was that he had a brain. Cassie was the girl who thought him stupid and he was having fun making her think otherwise but the joke will be up and he will find that the more he spends with her the more he wants her.

Cassie Barclay was genius smart, she wasn’t the normal girl next door. She will brush off Tuck and didn’t want to give him a moment of her time because he was a jock. The problem was she was attracted to him.

Girl Least Likely To Marry by Amy Andrews is the second book to Wedding Season series by four different authors. I liked this book, it was cute and a fast paced. Its a Harlequin romance, the first one was as well, so they tend to be shorter than other novels. I felt that this story flowed a little more than the first. I think it was because I have know gotten to know the friends a little better. It didn’t hurt that there were no hurt feelings that started with these two characters. There was a little annoyance with each other, really on Cassie’s side, but that quickly evaporated especially when they started to sleep with each other.

I honestly liked Cassie’s character as she was a genius, she just didn’t have much at experience with living life. It was kind of humorous when she started to act normal with feelings at the end. It was something she had never felt before. Tuck was kind of a player but all in good fun. I didn’t like he took Cassie on a dance with a wager but I warmed up to his character. He was fun loving and was smart which worked well for Cassie. I liked them together and was cheering for them to find that happy ending.

I am reading the third book, Maid of Dishonor, next which is with Gina.

Merry and Bright is a collection of short stories by Jill Shalvis. Reading books by this author you know that there will be some humor and compassion when it comes to these characters and it was true for these stories. All of these stories centered around the Christmas season which brought out the wishes for finding someone to love. Now even though it was the Christmas season there was still danger that drifted through these stories. The danger was not bombs exploding but harmless stalkers, Colorado’s wildlife and a half kind of crazy girl. For me I thought the danger was a little silly at times but it gave the hero and heroine something to survive and to bring them together.

Overall I thought these were cute and fun stories.

The Vampire With The Dragon Tattoo

The Vampire with The Dragon TattooA few years ago Dougal Kincaid lost his hand in battle and now he has a new hand that is controlled by his mind. Dougal finds it is hard to handle especially as he is distracted with the new scientist who he knew as his first love three hundred years ago.

Leah Chin is a brilliant doctor who will learn very soon that vampires are real. She will be drawn towards Dougal at the first sight of him and doesn’t understand it. She will be drawn into danger as she follows her heart. Leah will find out more when the enemy gets too close.

The Vampire with the Dragon Tattoo is the fourteenth book to Kerrelyn Sparks series Love At Stake. I have started this series a while ago and got hooked on these quirky characters. Lately Sparks has been leading her characters down the path that is a little darker. It is not just happy/quirky characters finding love which gives the book a little more.

I was intrigued from the start with the idea of past life of Leah Chin. I was wondering if it was true and if it was would she remember. The drive to know what was to happen was one thing that kept me going. Another was of course the instant draw that Dougal had which pulled you into the book. I wanted to know more about him and his tattoo that was not anything normal.

The enemy, Master Han, is actually pretty vicious. It was interesting how Sparks used the scenes between himself and Leah to change the book and the fate once again for Dougal. The misery wouldn’t last too long for him as the ending will eventually give him and Leah a second and third chance for happiness that was ripped away from them.

The fifteenth book will not come out till April so its going to be a wait but I will definitely be back to read the next one.

Proof of Seduction

Madame Esmerelda or really known as Jenny has played the role of the fortune teller for twelve years but it was time to stop the charade especially as a bet was now placed on her. Jenny did not want to hurt Ned who would find out she was a fake but before she would surrender she found herself surrendering to his cousin the scientist.

Gareth Carhart, the Marquess of Blakely did not believe in fortune tellers. All he knew for certain was this woman as taking advantage of his cousin who was spending a lot of money on her predictions. This was going to stop now. Gareth would set out to prove that this fortune teller was a fraud but he finds himself being pulled into her web only to discover the real woman.

Proof by SeductionI had seen Courtney Milan’s name and decided to grab a book of hers to try her out. Proof by Seduction is the first book of Carhart series and I thought it was very good. At first I was not pulled into the story but once it started to unravel you are taken with the story especially how the main characters are a fake fortune teller and a scientist. The pair seemed unlikely and it is but throughout the book that all changes for them. Romance along with a fiery passion builds and finally burst between the two characters but it will not be an insistent happiness. For me I thought Milan does a wonderful job on character detail throughout the book. Each had a past which they were hiding from or dealing with. At the end of the book you felt as you knew the characters. I will certainly be checking out more from Courtney Milan.

Thursday’s Child by Sandra Brown

Two sisters, twins, will make the switch but one sister is going to have a hard time getting rid of one of the men.  Ane and Allison Leamon are twins.  Anne is going under surgery and wants Allison to impersonate herself.  Allison doesn’t want to.  She can’t lie but she goes anyways.

Davis, Ann fiancee, loves her and wants to show her off.  Allsion gets the task to show off and to meet his best friend.  Spencer is the friend.  Allison stops breathing as she gazes on him.  She can’t play the cool sister like Ann.

Spencer falls for Ann, really Allison.  Falls hard and fast and lets her know.  Allison can’t handle it.  She finally tells everyone the truth.  But the story is not over for Allison.  Spencer still wants the woman he meet that night.  But who is Spencer and will Allison really have a chance.

This love story was fun to read.  There were humorous parts that left you smiling and sensual scenes.  Switching places is done a lot but Brown creates it to be fun to read.

I loved Allison’s character and felt for her as she had to deal with her sisters liveliness when she was so shy.  But it was nice to see that she could get out of her shell.

Thursday’s Child is enjoyable, has a witty plot, and creative lovable characters.

Secrets of The Highlander by Janet Chapman

Picking up this book up I knew that I wanted to try out the series.  Of course I didn’t know at the time that it was the last book, I couldn’t remember the order when I looked at the series.  But seeing how I grabbed the book I thought I would give it a go and I was drawn instantly, yet very confused.  There was a little on the background of the family in the very beginning of the book I knew some of what happened to the family, but I have to say the concept is a little confusing with the family and their abilities, and time traveling.  But very interesting to read.

“Megan MacKeage escaped the smothering protectiveness of the Highland MacKeage clan to work as a scientist on the Canadian tundra.  But when fellow researcher Wayne Ferris breaks her heart by rejecting her, Megan returns to Maine alone…Then she meets the town’s new police chief, Jack Stone-the man she knew as Wayne Ferris.  Instead of the quiet scholar he posed as, he’s an aggressive private eye who’s willing to fight for what he wants, just like all the overbearing men in her clan.  So why is Megan still feeling dangerous attraction?  And though Jack claims he followed her here because he loves her, can she ever trust a man with so many secrets?”

Finishing up the book, still a little confused but needless to say I enjoyed the book greatly.  I thought it was very entertaining with Megan’s family and how they were in everyones business.  She came home from her job with more than she expected, getting pregnant and no husband.  She left the man she loved after he broke her heart, but was Jack really meaning everything he told her?

Jack comes to this town in hopes to get close to Megan again and pray that she forgives him but he has to protect her and his child.  As Jack gets closer to the family he understands they are different but Jack holds his own secrets as well.  He has his own magic from his grandfather who was a shaman.  Will they be able to find love again and over come their secrets?
