Sweetest Scoundrel

Sweetest ScoundrelMiss Eve Dinwoody is the bastard sister of Duke of Montgomery. She loved her blackmailing brother but disliked what he did to others. She will soon find herself in charge of her brothers money for Harte’s Folly. Eve could handle the bookkeeping but could not handle the owner, Asa.

Asa Makepeace aka Mr. Harte had been working at the theater since he was seventeen years. Asa had worked hard to make sure his theater was a success and he was close to the new opening, only one problem stood in his way, Eve Dinwoody. Asa knew he could not charm her like his other women, Asa would have to work hard to have Eve trust him.

Sweetest Scoundrel is the ninth book to the Maiden Lane by Elizabeth Hoyt. I really loved this book. I was happy to have Hoyt going back to the family that started the series, the Makepeace’s.

Asa’s character was a man who followed a path he knew that his family didn’t want. He was passionate and good at his job. I really liked him though in the beginning I did think that Asa was an ass to Eve. Though Eve was being cold to him as well. They each had their own reasons for being how they were and it was interesting how Hoyt wrote their back stories, especially Eve’s. You knew that something terrible had happened to her especially with her reaction to certain things that happened at the theater. The truth will be revealed and its pretty bad but things do get better for Eve especially when Asa starts helping. Eve’s character was shy and scared. She cared for those who were close but she was too scared to really take a step out of her own shadow. She will be able to take that step thanks to Asa.

The villain was unknown until close to the end when Hoyt revealed the truth. I felt that with the villain things moved very quickly at the end. I wouldn’t have minded a little more but in the end I got what I wanted with what happened to the villain.

The next book to the Maiden Lane comes out this May. This one will be with Val, the Duke of Montgomery and with Mrs. Crumb. I have a feeling this one will have a lot of secrets and some twist as these are not exactly honest characters. I can’t wait to read their story.

No Limits

No LimitsCannon Colter’s goal was to go for the title but there will be a bump in the road that he will first have to get through. Cannon will find out he is part owner of a house and pawnshop with Yvette. Cannon will take this opportunity to get to know Yvette again and to protect her from danger that will surround her.

Yvette Sweeny did not want to come home to settle her grandfather’s estate but she has to. She will be shocked that Cannon was named as part owner, but will be even more shocked when Cannon wants to stay. She knows that he is being a hero again, but after a while she will start to wonder if he truly wants more.

No Limits is the first book to the Ultimate series by Lori Foster. I could not put this book down. It completely reminded me of the SBC fighters series which I have devoured over and over. When I read the prequel I knew already I would love this series and it was reinforced when I completed this book.

I think you can guess that I really did love this book, I am a big fan of Lori Foster. The thing that I liked about this book were how the characters were written. Yes the fact that Cannon was a fighter and extremely sexy was a big plus, but that was not the deciding factor. If an author can make me like the characters then I know that I will really enjoy the book. With Foster’s characters they are not just there, there are emotions and a very detailed backgrounds that for the most part are not pleasant. The tragedies that she gives these characters give them more depth.

Cannon’s character was a tough and caring guy. He made sure to back off when he needed and went all in when it was needed. I was excited to read his story especially when he was introduced back in Love Undercover series. Yvette’s character had been through hell three years ago and it haunted her still. That made Yvette very guarded, which led her to being closed off when it came to sexuality. Cannon will be able to help Yvette open up and feel things that she had been trying to stay buried. I also liked how Yvette’s character faced trouble. It was realistic, a little naive, but it felt real.

So there was a twist with who ever was after Yvette. There were a couple choices that I had thought were the bad guys, but Foster blindsided me with the person who ended up coming after her. Well the people I thought were guilty were still guilty, they had their own part in the twist.

I am looking forward to reading more about these fighters. I will be reading Denver next and then Stack. I will have to wait for Armie’s story but not for long as it comes out February.

Sunrise with a Notorious Lord

Sunrise with a Notorious LordChristopher Courtland, Earl of Vanewright, or known as Vane does not want to be married by anyone who his mother wants. Vane will be curious about the one woman, Isabel, who seems to be able to resist him.

Miss Isabel Thorne was in London to give her sister a season. She will be torn to help her sister find a husband as the man their patron wanted for Delia was the man Isabel wanted.

Sunrise with a Notorious Lord is the fourth book to Lords of Vice by Alexandra Hawkins. I had picked up Hawkins book on a whim and found it pretty good. I wasn’t blown away in the beginning but started to like it more as the story went on and you found out more with these characters.

Vane is a man who wants to do his own thing and doesn’t like his mother interfering which I thought was amusing at times. I liked that the rake in him was starting to reform as the idea of Isabel at his side did not have him running away. Isabel’s mission was to take care of her family. I liked that she finally got something of herself. Though they are a long way from a happy ending as there are secrets Isabel has and will sabotage the budding relationship. I am happy to say that the sabotage doesn’t interfere too much with the happy ending. I thought the sabotage was done well and felt bad for Vane and Isabel but because of that they were able to get to know each other.

I felt there was more to this story that I was missing. It wasn’t anything that disrupted from the books story, it was more like the background of Vane and his friends. I wanted to know more about how this group came together and more about his friends.

I have no love loss for Delia, Isabel’s sister. First the girl is too immature and was caught more than once kissing Isabel’s almost betrothed and seems to be kissing another that Isabel truly wants. From all of that I was inclined to dislike her but then in the story she seems to be okay and a decent person. I guess her character confused me, but I would say overall I wasn’t a fan of Delia.

Thanks to the intrigue of these friends who formed the group of Lords of Vice I will be looking out for the beginning books of Alexandra Hawkins series.

One Lucky Vampire

One Lucky VampireNicole Phillips is a successful artist but going through a divorce that is leaving her with too many problems. She will get some help with a new cook/housekeeper but she will be getting more than she realized.

Jake Colson is on a job thanks to a family member but it is not the normal security job. He has to play a role to help protect an artist who is being threatened by her ex-husband. He will keep an eye on her but his lust will take over even when the accidents gets too close.

One Lucky Vampire is the nineteenth book from the Argeneau Family series by Lynsay Sands. I have read all of the books of this series and it keeps me going with every book I have read. Lynsay Sands brings this series with a interesting twist with the nanos. This was another good book to read. She keeps growing the series with new family members and it looks as if she is giving more options going to the Notte side of the family. There is a side of me that still loves the very beginning books the best but no matter what these books are very entertaining.

I liked Nicole’s character in the book. She was an artist and stressed over all that she has been happening to her with the divorce. I liked that you found out more info on the soon to be ex husband which gives several answers to several situations that happened. Now there is of course our hero who is Jake. He was turned only seven years ago and doesn’t really like it. He does understand more now and stops hating what he is.

There will be plenty of sex between Nicole and Jake once they understand they are life mates and it doesn’t really stop. Their relationship goes fast pretty quickly but that is like most of the couples in the series. It gets a little humorous with Jake’s family intruding on them. I thought that getting to who is behind all the accidents took a while to have it all wrapped up together. There is a twist with this person that kept you guessing towards a different direction.

Reservations for Two

Reservations for TwoTilly Milek was in high hopes of a successful restaurant but it all came crashing down to one disastrous night when a food critic was at the restaurant and gave a horrible review. Tilly had to save her restaurant but she will be distracted by a stranger who started to barge into her life. Tilly started to have feelings for him but she froze when she found out he was the food critic.

Dan Meier was a freelance writer and was doing his friend a favor with writing a column on restaurant reviews. He took his mother to a polish restaurant and the night was disastrous and he gave the review under stress. He knew he didn’t make a mistake but when he meets the owner/chef he finds that he is attracted to her. He knew that if she found out things would be over before they even started, but he knew that things would come out sooner than later.

Reservations for Two by Jennifer Lohmann was one that was a fun short novel to read. The plot is set in Chicago and around the time of the Taste of Chicago.  I liked that simple fact as I am an Illinois residence.

Now to the characters I thought Lohmann did a nice job at making them realistic. I had thought at first Dan’s over analysis of his guilt playing over and over was a little over done but its realistic. Tilly was one person who I loved in the book. She was determined and optimistic but when it all finally got to her she felt defeated and then hopeful again. She was a ball of emotions but once again realistic.

The villain here was the sabotage that was happening within the restaurant. I didn’t have a clue who was the person or why they were doing this. Lohmann will give the identity of the person almost at the very end and the explanation.

Reservation for Two was a fun book to read and I am looking forward to reading about Tilly’s sister when the next book comes out.

Under Her Skin

Under Her SkinLexi Titan is in a bind when the loan of two million dollars was owed at the end of the month. Not wanting to go to her father Lexi tried to think how she would get it, then opportunity landed in her lap when Cruz Rodriguez was willing to make a deal. Lexi knew it was a bad idea especially with the past they shared but it was the only way.

Cruz Rodriguez wanted the privilege that went along with the royalty of Texas. He was a self made millionaire but to those of the rich he was still a barrio boy who would amount to nothing. He was going to use Lexi to gain that what he desired. What he didn’t expect was for the old feelings to still be there.

After I read a couple of books from Fool’s Gold series I was expecting Lone Star Sisters to follow the same path of heartwarming tales. Susan Mallery surprises me with this story as it has a little more of an edge to it along side with mystery. There is of course still a heartwarming tale and heartbreaking situations.

The characters of Lexi and Cruz are strong in their own right and each have their own flaws. I felt for Lexi and all that she had to deal with in her personal life. Cruz you felt for but you wanted him to be less cold and to have a way to open up to love. At times he was a hard character to like.

The one thing they shared is sex which is the only thing they were good at together at least in the beginning. I liked that everything started to unravel making the farce of an engagement into something permanent. Of course that is not an easy path to go down especially with problems occurring from a man named Garth. You are introduced to this character and at first you don’t know what to think but it gets pretty clear its personally. I knew that Garth was the illegitimate brother of these sisters but what I wasn’t expecting was the sinister way he was being played out. He wanted to hurt this family that he was estranged from and it all stems from whatever happened to his mother. I really want to know what happened. I have a feeling that he will be the villain throughout but as he will be staring in the fourth book there has to be something redeeming about him.

Now I liked all the sisters so far but the father Jed Titan is one less to be desired. He is an ass to his children and thinks he is the one to rule them all especially with the mind games he play. He is not an easy character to warm up to.

Under Her Skin was a page turner and so far turning out to be a very engaging series. I checked out the other three books already knowing that I would want to read them all in a row. I am especially glad as I want to know what other secrets these books will be uncovering.

Charmed by His Love

Charmed by His LoveDuncan MacKeage has been charged with the task for watching out for Peg and her children. He has no desire to tangle himself with this group but Duncan will find himself falling for the widow.

Peg Thompson does not want charity from her friends. She works hard and earns her own way in the world. She will be infuriated with Duncan who is barging in, but will simmer down and soon let him in. But with letting him in her children will start to fall for him as she is but she has to worry about her family curse and a different kind of magic altogether.

As the series of Spellbound Falls continues I find myself liking it more and more. In Charmed by His Love you are getting to know the characters more and knowing more about their past. I loved Peg and her stubbornness as well as the curse. It was unexpected thing to read especially as she is mortal.  What I found adorable was the heathens (Peg’s four children). They were all strong characters as a family and added humor to the story. As this story is surrounded by magic and time traveling highlanders it was an interesting twist with Peg’s own curse. The story is heartwarming as our hero Duncan will not back down once and sooner than later he will be hooked with Peg and her children.
