Connecting Rooms

connecting roomsAmy Comfort moved to the small town after a horrific incident in Seattle. She was looking for a quiet life so she could sell houses and write her romance novel. Then when her aunt becomes engaged and Amy is worried about the fiance. She will ask Owen to investigate him which will bring them a lot closer.

Owen Sweet wanted Amy from the moment he saw her. Owen will take the subtle approach when it comes to Amy but then things will get complicated when she needs his help as a private investigator. He will take the job and hope to get closer to Amy.

Connecting Rooms is a novel by Jayne Ann Krentz. I have read many books from Krentz and have liked them all, some more than others but they have all been enjoyable. It feels like its been a while since I picked up a book from Krentz and I will say it was fun coming back to the author. I thought this book was enjoyable and one that went very quick.

Amy’s character was a woman who was healing after a tragic event and moving on in her life. I thought she was funny with her imagination which came from her being a writer. Owen’s character was a private investigator and he really was a good guy but he wasn’t being assertiveness enough. That will change when he will show Amy that he does want her. The chemistry between the characters is subtle until Owen steps it up a notch and really shows Amy he wants her. I liked them together.

The mystery was good because I was thought I had the perfect suspect, but I was wrong. It is sometimes the most logical choice.

I don’t know what my next book from Jayne Ann Krentz will be but I will be on the lookout for one.

The Perfect Couple

The Perfect CoupleZoe Duncan was living a normal life as she could when the unthinkable happens. She will come home to find that her daughter has gone missing. Zoe is frantic with worry thanks to her past and fears for her little girl. She will find help in a private investigator, Jonathan, but leads will be scarce and Zoe will be worried that she wouldn’t find her daughter.

Jonathan Stivers is a private investigator on a job trying to find a missing girl. He will do all that he can for Zoe to find her daughter with searching every possible clue that he can think of. He will come up with very little until he starts to think closer to Zoe’s home and wonder about the perfect neighbors.

The Perfect Couple is the fourth book to Last Stand series by Brenda Novak. First thought after reading this book was wow, that was messed up. I really loved the twisted characters and plot that occurred as Novak wrote the book well but still it was messed up.

Zoe was a fighter through and through especially with all that she had to go endure in their lifetime. She is given another problem with her daughter being taken. Okay now throughout this book since you knew who the bad guys were you wanted to shout at Zoe to see them. They were right in front of her and she had no idea. That was the most frustrating part of the novel but it did bring in that element in the book that made it that more intriguing. With Jonathan who you heard about from the previous books gets his own book. I was interested to know more about him as his name was mentioned. I liked Jonathan’s character in the book. He was an investigator and good at his job but he was flawed with his own demons to battle. They do make a good team with chemistry and helping each other in this mission to find her daughter. Well maybe in the initial search it wasn’t going very well but when things started to fall into place they were there for each other.

The villains were very clear in the book. This doesn’t always happen when you know right away who the bad guys were as it is a mystery. I was worried that the book might not be intriguing as I already knew who the villains were, but by knowing these people you were given the insight to their twisted world. It was a plot that kept you going, you think when a child is kidnapped they take them far away. You would not expect that the villains would be the neighbors next door. So since you knew the villains were the neighbors that opened up the plot and let you find out more on these neighbors which was disturbing. Colin was a sadist and so was Tiffany but she was submissive to Colin. They were twisted keeping these kids and treating them like pets. There was a point when Zoe was in danger by Colin and because of what happened to Zoe in her past I was really hoping that she would be alright, she was but it was a close call.

Well with The Perfect Couple now finished I am done with the Last Stand series and I have to say it was a series to read. There was no easy plot as they were all victims but these were strong woman who fought to survive and I wouldn’t have had it any other way.

The Thousand Dollar Tan Line

The Thousand Dollar Tan LineVeronica Mars is back in Neptune working on a new case leaving her future in New York behind. She will get a case of a girl who went missing on Spring Break. Soon another girl will go missing and Veronica will have to search quickly to find out what is going on.

Veronica Mars was a television show that I watched years ago, all three seasons, and I have watched it numerous times over the years. I could not and still cannot get enough of Veronica Mars with her sleuth skills and her quirky wit. So then this year a movie was made with Veronica Mars and it was 10 years later after the series was finished. Needless to say but I will do it anyways because I was so excited to see this movie. I saw it and own it. I just re-watched it the other night which got me in the mood to read this book. I bought the book about a month or two ago and with all the books I read from the library it just got pushed to the side more and more. To be honest I was a little scared that it would not be as good as the series and movie since I have loved watching them. Well the book The Thousand Dollar Tan Line was better than I could have ever anticipated. Rob Thomas writes this story with the help of Jennifer Graham and it was fantastic writing. It was full of quick wit, some danger and overall fun. For me it was like walking back into the world of Veronica Mars, like I never left.

This book takes up right after the movie which I thought was pretty awesome. She has a big case with one missing girl and danger will be at every corner as she starts to mess with the cartel. But then another girl will go missing who was at the same party with the cartel. So you think these two girls are connected with the party well just remember this is a mystery and things don’t go always as you would think. Just when you think you know who is the one behind it another twist shows up. It is all about misdirection with Veronica Mars.

In the book Logan is back in the military but he will still be around connecting with Veronica which made me happy because since the beginning I was always a Veronica and Logan fan. Keith Mars is there who I loved as he still played the whacky father but had that serious side who was a concerned father. There was also Wallace, Mac, Weevill all part of the cast and the idiot Sheriff who made himself known in the movie. I thought as a whole these characters lived up to how they were portrayed in their memorable roles.

Amongst all the twists and turns in the book there was another surprise. A person from Veronica’s past will show up. I was torn with the character because of how Veronica was treated by this person but I wanted to see how and if they changed.

The ending is true form of how Veronica handles danger which usually means she gets hurt in the process but the bad guys are always gotten. There is another book to this series which is fantastic. I did not know if this was going to be a one time book, but it appears that it isn’t. Veronica Mars might be gone now from the television but will be alive in print and I can’t wait to read the next installment to the series. My only hope is that Rob Thomas continues to write these stories.

Jabril

JabrilCynthia Leighton needed a break from her ex vampire lover, Raphael so she heads down to Texas to take a job. The moment she meets Jabril she knows she made a mistake as this man was not to be messed with. Cyn will need help rescuing the sisters and finds that with her ex and his men.

The moment I got Jabril I started to read the book. After reading the first book from the series Vampires in America I was hooked. D B Reynolds has a way with her writing that got me in a trance and I only wanted more. Jabril brings us back with Cyn but she has a new case in Texas and she is still a confident bad ass when she is around the undead. Now this plot I liked a lot. It was not original but Reynolds creates her characters extremely well and you want to know more. I loved the two sisters that the plot surrounded and how Cyn found a way to help both of them out. I would love to read a story on Mirabelle later on. Along with locating the sister Reynolds adds in an investigation on several other murdered girls which are linked together and gave more to the story.

Now the characters Cyn is still fantastic. I loved the steamy dreams she has with her ex vampire lover, Raphael but thrilled he is still in the picture as I knew he had to be. Raphael is still perfect as always and I will have to say when he declares himself to Cyn it will make your heart melt and yell at her to be with him forever. Of course everything is not perfect as the enemy who is Jabril will be a fierce competitor and only wants power and money, but his sights will be set on Cyn. Reynolds doesn’t joke around with the villains, you knew perfectly well who the villain was and how evil he was. I wasn’t sure about his number two but wasn’t surprised with what happens. Reynolds makes sure that the villains will get what is coming to them. What I was surprised at was how Cyn handles the situation. She is still a very fierce woman in battle and one that can take care of herself. Now there was one other villain I was surprised about but once again they were handled.

It looks like the next story is going to be on Sarah, Cyn’s friend who is mysterious in her own way which I can’t wait to find out more.

A Bite To Remember

Continuing on with the Argeneau Family series the next one is A Bite To Remember the fifth book.

Vincent Argeneau is a four hundred year old immortal. He is tired of life, tired of acting but there is a problem. The people around him are starting to get into accidents. Vincent’s problem will be solved with the help of a PI, but knew problems will occur especially how attractive his PI is.

Jackie Morrisey is a PI for her fathers firm and now the owner. She takes her job seriously. She keeps her distance from immortals as she had an encounter with one years ago. But with one look at Vincent she found herself loosing the battle. She wants him more that she knew, but as the bodies keep building Jackie will have to watch out for herself before she becomes a target.

Since starting this series I have found that it is one that pulls you in and I of course have my favorite characters, Marguerite’s children especially. The series is witty and has its own humor along with adventure. Vincent’s story was very much like the rest of the others but nevertheless I liked how Lynsay Sands writes the story. Sands delivers a small twist with life mates that will have readers angry until they find out what happens next.

I liked the back stories that Sands gives each character but especially Jackie as you feel for her character and the trouble (an immortal) that she found herself in at eighteen. Through that trouble you want her to find some kind of justice and love which will make up for her struggle.

I liked once again how Marguerite played as a matchmaker. I still hope that Sands will give her a chance to find her own true life mate. I guess I will hold out as this is only the fifth book of the ever going series.

Crystal Gardens

Not knowing that Amanda Quick aka Jayne Ann Krentz had a new release I happily took the book from my grab and go section in my library. Crystal Gardens is the latest paranormal romance book and the first book of the new series Flint & Marsh.

Evangeline Ames is a paid companion but that is not all she does. She  is a writer and secret investigator in high society, but now she is on break. Two attempted murders in the same year is tough on a person. Evangeline manged to avoid the second attempt by going into her nearest neighbor, the Crystal Gardens.

Lucas Sebastian owns the Crystal Gardens and takes intruders seriously especially with the recent passing of his Uncle. Lucas helps the damsel but the danger doesn’t stop when the intruder drops dead. Lucas will help protect Evangeline but he will soon find out the villain might want something of his as well.

With passion, the Crystal Gardens and their paranormal abilities in high gear Evangeline and Lucas will come together. But there will not be a moments peace as treasure hunters are around at every corner and would be murders.

Reading and loving most of Amanda Quick’s books I knew that Crystal Gardens would be enjoyable before I flipped to the first page. Now saying all that I am torn as I went to read I found myself thinking of the other arcane society books and how this feels familiar. That was a little disappointing until I went further into the story and you are swept into the story.

The story line yes is similar to the others with a mysterious item or powers and the two main characters are both powerful with their abilities, but Quick brings in twists or little surprises to keep you invested.

With Quick she gets you in with the intrigue the plot and characters generate through the pages. You want to know more of the danger and the villain. Or will the two characters ever find that love they were not looking for.

Quick also brings humor and wit to the pages with Lucas’s family and Evangeline’s friends. Without those side characters Crystal Gardens would be a good story but I feel incomplete.

I look forward to how Quick will continue this new series and what other problem will occur in the paranormal way.

Tough Customer by Sandra Brown

The latest book in 2010 for Brown is out and it is another fantastic thriller to read.

Colleagues, friends, and lovers know Dodge Hanley as a private investigator who doesn’t let rules get in his way-in his private life as well as his professional one.  If he breaks a heart, or bends the law in order to catch a criminal, he does so without hesitation or apology.

That’s why he’s the first person Caroline King-who after a thirty-year separation continues to haunt his dreams-asks for help when a deranged stalker attempts to murder their daughter…the daughter Dodge has never met.  He has a whole bagful of grudging excuses for wishing to ignore Caroline’s call, and one compelling reason to drop everything and fly down to Texas: guilt.

Dodge’s mind may be a haze of disturbing memories and bad decisions, but he arrives in Houston knowing with perfect clarity that his daughter, Berry, is in danger.  She has become the object of desire of a co-worker, a madman and genius with a penchant for puzzles and games who has spent the past year making Berry’s life hell, and who now has vowed to kill her.

Dodge joins forces with local deputy sheriff Ski Nyland, but the alarming situation goes from bad to worse when the stalker begins to claim other victims and leaves an ominous trail to clues as he lethally works his way toward Berry.  Sensing the killer drawing nearer, Dodge, who’s survived vicious criminals and his own self-destructive impulses, realizes that this time he’s in for the fight of his life.

This is one of those books which so many bad things happen there is a glimmer of hope that comes out of the plot and a second chance is given and taken.

I like that the book left you with the impression and hope that everything will work out.  And I liked that the ending you got was a struggle to get to which made the book worth reading.

I found all the characters amazing to read, all intense in their own ways.  Dodge was my favorite because he was flawed.  He made mistakes and kept paying for them.

In the plot I also liked how the time went back and fourth.  Dodge and Caroline’s story was sad but the end gave that hope you were looking for and gave a second chance.

Brown creates this dynamic plot and characters who have many faults, hopes and have trouble that had been in their lives only to survive them.  A fantastic book to read.
