Discovering You

Discovering YouIndia Sommers had lived through a tragedy eleven months ago when her husband was murder in front of her eyes. She was trying to move on with her life but things were not working out for India especially when her husbands killer was free. She will find herself getting help from a neighbor.

Rod Amos was curious about his neighbor. He was instantly attracted to her but it wasn’t just sex he wanted. He wanted to know India and to help her anyway that he could. Rod will quickly find himself involved with India’s past that was still causing problems.

Discovering You is the tenth book in the series Whiskey Creek by Brenda Novak. I liked the book. It was more towards suspense which wasn’t a bad thing. I was wondering if I would dislike it as it was back with the Amos brothers but I found myself liking it.

India’s character was someone who had been tormented when her past boyfriend killed her husband. Because of this tragedy India was broken and scared. I could understand this especially with what she was made to do, but at times India bugged me. I wanted her to stand up more for herself, not at the murder but later in the book. Though she will find her voice in the book. Rod’s character was all around good guy who just happened to be the perfect example of a bad boy. I liked that Rod was but he was very much reformed and with India he wanted it all with her.

India’s parents in law were not the warmest of families. They were pretty cruel to her and treated like she was trash. This was all because India’s past was very colorful with indiscretions. She made a lot of bad choices and one of them had been dating Sebastian a long time ago, who was the man that killed her husband. I got the feeling that they really did love her as a daughter in law, but again they had just lost their son. They wanted to blame someone. The only redeeming quality was that they seemed to care for Cassie, their grandchild.

I am done for now with the series but figure more will be written especially with two more of the Amos brothers out there.

Don’t Tempt Me

Don't Tempt MeHonor’s life was complicated and did not have time for any attachments. She will find that attachments will come quickly when her life will be invaded by helpful neighbors. Though the only one that really got under her skin was Jason.

Jason will meet his new neighbor and instantly will want her. Though as he gets to know her a protective side will emerge and Jason will find himself protecting her, at least once she lets him in.

Don’t Tempt Me is the latest novel by Lori Foster. The last one that I read was for me good but not my favorite. Don’t Tempt Me was a novel I got into right away. There was enough mystery to the story with Honor that lead to heartbreak but it wasn’t overplayed. Also, the romance was built up, they didn’t just jump into sleeping together within the first chapter.

Honor’s character was a woman who had been put through a lot in the past two years. She was exhausted but was determined to do everything she needed. I liked that Honor was independent and she did not just give into Jason’s help. Jason’s character was a man who did his work and helped his family. He was someone who did what they could for someone in trouble. Pretty much Jason was the perfect man, but it wasn’t so perfect that got annoying. I will say that Jason had alpha tendency’s, but to be fair it seemed all the guys in the story had that same trait.

So Honor’s extended family was pretty horrible. They were greedy and very insulting when it came to Honor. Her great aunt confused me. She was helping, at least that is what it seemed, but she was going about it a strange way. I liked that Jason and her neighbor and friend wanted to help. They stood by her so Honor would not feel alone anymore. Though Honor was not weak, she showed her strength at the right time.

There was a side story with Sullivan (one of Honor’s neighbors) and Lexie (Honor’s best friend). I liked their story but it definitely could have used more detail to really get to know the characters. My main focus was on Honor and Jason and how their story was being told.

Suddenly One Summer

Suddenly One SummerVictoria Slade is trying to find Mr. Right but so far things haven’t been going right especially when she has a break-in. Victoria will have to move which is where she will meet Ford. She will instantly think him a player but as they work together she will find that was not the case.

Ford Dixon is trying to help his sister find out the guy she had slept with and he will get help from a neighbor. He will want the neighbor immediately but will find her difficult. Ford will do what he can to win over Victoria and help his sister.

Suddenly One Summer is a novel by Julie James. This is not part of a series but it does have characters from the series FBI/US Attorney. I thought this was a good book to read.

I haven’t read anything from James for a while but I will say that she is a good storyteller. I kind of wish she embellished on the scene with the break-in that happened in the beginning. I liked where that was going, though how she created Victoria to have a panic disorder after that felt very real which I liked. Someone who goes through a break-in would not go unaffected. I liked Victoria’s character, she was a little hard but being a divorce lawyer probably made her more jaded. Though I did like that she was able to help out Ford’s sister. Ford’s character was the laid back kind of guy and kind of a player but not a serious one. I wanted Ford to break down the barriers and really get to know Victoria which he will, it just takes a while.

I thought the part with the sister was sweet and I was glad that everything worked out for the best.

Ready, Set, Jett

Ready, Set, JettNatalie loved having friends with benefits with her neighbor but soon it will change. Jett will start to want more than just sex. Natalie is not sure she wants that but she didn’t want Jett out of her life.

Ready, Set, Jett is the prologue in the series Men Who Walk the Edge of Honor by Lori Foster. This was a quick and fun story. It was less on the danger side than the other books in the series. Though there was some danger that was happening, the characters just didn’t know it was going on.

Natalie’s character did not want to get close to anyone. She had trust issues and she kept her secrets close to her. She liked Jett because it was an easy relationship, she was just using Jett for sex. I liked that Natalie was confident to do that. Though I was also happy that Natalie was discovering that she had true feelings for Jett. With Jett’s character he was a man on a mission. He wanted Natalie, but he wanted her more than friends with benefits. I liked that Jett was a take charge kind of man but he was also generous.

So I have read the rest of the series with the exception of the last book which is a novella. I will be reading that next.

One Night with a Hero

One Night with a HeroArmy Special Forces Sgt. Brady Scott was back home from the military trying to start his life again. Brady knew he was holding back which was why he was trying to get therapy for his problems that were from his past. Brady will get sidetracked when a one night stand comes into his life.

Joss Daniels has had a rocky childhood and things in her adult life weren’t going so great. Joss was determined to give herself a stable life and low risk, though when she meets Brady she can’t help but take a chance.

One Night with a Hero is the second and final book to the Hero series by Laura Kaye. I really liked this book, I liked it better than the first book. I guess it held my attention throughout the book and I thought that the characters had drawn me in to the story very quickly.

Both of the characters are connected with their childhood traumas. Joss had grown up in an orphan while Brady lost his mother and in turn lost his father who had changed into a anger driven man. I liked Brady for the most part but he took too long to realize that he had screwed up, though he did make up for his mistake. I loved how he tried to woo Joss back, he did it right. Joss’s character I liked as well. For her I thought she should have given him another chance to explain, but of course that didn’t happen, at least not right away.

I only have one more book in my list to read for Laura Kaye, at least for the moment, Hearts in Darkness, which I will be reading next.

The Perfect Couple

The Perfect CoupleZoe Duncan was living a normal life as she could when the unthinkable happens. She will come home to find that her daughter has gone missing. Zoe is frantic with worry thanks to her past and fears for her little girl. She will find help in a private investigator, Jonathan, but leads will be scarce and Zoe will be worried that she wouldn’t find her daughter.

Jonathan Stivers is a private investigator on a job trying to find a missing girl. He will do all that he can for Zoe to find her daughter with searching every possible clue that he can think of. He will come up with very little until he starts to think closer to Zoe’s home and wonder about the perfect neighbors.

The Perfect Couple is the fourth book to Last Stand series by Brenda Novak. First thought after reading this book was wow, that was messed up. I really loved the twisted characters and plot that occurred as Novak wrote the book well but still it was messed up.

Zoe was a fighter through and through especially with all that she had to go endure in their lifetime. She is given another problem with her daughter being taken. Okay now throughout this book since you knew who the bad guys were you wanted to shout at Zoe to see them. They were right in front of her and she had no idea. That was the most frustrating part of the novel but it did bring in that element in the book that made it that more intriguing. With Jonathan who you heard about from the previous books gets his own book. I was interested to know more about him as his name was mentioned. I liked Jonathan’s character in the book. He was an investigator and good at his job but he was flawed with his own demons to battle. They do make a good team with chemistry and helping each other in this mission to find her daughter. Well maybe in the initial search it wasn’t going very well but when things started to fall into place they were there for each other.

The villains were very clear in the book. This doesn’t always happen when you know right away who the bad guys were as it is a mystery. I was worried that the book might not be intriguing as I already knew who the villains were, but by knowing these people you were given the insight to their twisted world. It was a plot that kept you going, you think when a child is kidnapped they take them far away. You would not expect that the villains would be the neighbors next door. So since you knew the villains were the neighbors that opened up the plot and let you find out more on these neighbors which was disturbing. Colin was a sadist and so was Tiffany but she was submissive to Colin. They were twisted keeping these kids and treating them like pets. There was a point when Zoe was in danger by Colin and because of what happened to Zoe in her past I was really hoping that she would be alright, she was but it was a close call.

Well with The Perfect Couple now finished I am done with the Last Stand series and I have to say it was a series to read. There was no easy plot as they were all victims but these were strong woman who fought to survive and I wouldn’t have had it any other way.

Charmed by Nora Roberts

The third book to the series The Donovan Legacy was Charmed. The guarded Ana will now have a challenge in her new neighbor.

Ana Donovan is no stranger to heart break. She told the truth of who she was and was rejected. From then on she only wants to be alone but then Boone Sawyer comes into her life and she knows he could get through to her. Boone is a writer of fairy tales but does not believe in magic. The two go with their attraction but it is tested when Boone learns the truth about Ana.

Ana’s story was enchanting to read. I love that she works with herbs to make potions to heal those around her. From the beginning I wondered what her power was going to be and it only made sense that she had the power to heal with her hands but there is a consequence since she takes that sickness into her.

The epilogue is perfect as Roberts wraps up the new families of the Donovan Legacy but the series is not over there is Liam which has not been talked about in detail so he will be a mystery.

Tempting with “Riley” by Lori Foster

Lori Foster brings another Tempting man in the series of Men to the Rescue in “Riley”. The strong, determined ex-swat is on a mission to protect Regina “Red” Foxworth by showing a few moves on and off the mat.

“Regina Foxworth has no clue why an unknown assailant is out to get a small-town reporter like her.  Or why the police woun’t take her concerns seriously.  So Regina gets a guard dog-make that a four-pound guard Chihuahua!-and signs up for self-defense classes.  But defending herself is not on her mind when sexy instructor Riley Moore has her pinned to the mat.

With Regina vulnerable beneath him on his gym floor, Riley breaks out in a possessive sweat.  He wants her, but first he has to protect her.  She needs him more than her don’t-muss-my-hair style of defense and that ridiculous so called dog.  Riley is ex-Swat and his new life as an evidence tech hasn’t softened his lethal training one bit.  But Regina isn’t quite the princess she seems, and she’s about to catch him off guard!”

Regina is a kind person and great reporter but she is starting get scared for her life.  Getting a guard dog was the first step of the solution.  The second was training with Riley for self-defense.  Of course her attraction was getting in the way.

Riley loved the chance to be with Regina and now with the threats he wasn’t letting her leave his sight.  Training her wasn’t enough so he decided to have her move in with him, to protect her.  And Riley is only to happy to spend some time with her.  As the two of them started living together the passion was flaring and the threat was trying to be discovered but there were still things unanswered.  The idea of love between the two and a framed photograph in Regina’s draw of the senator.

This book was another great book of Men to the Rescue.  I loved the characters of Regina and Riley, nice to see them back in their own book.  Regina and Riley were adorable together but Butch, Regina’s four pound chihuahua guard dog, was a new fantastic part of the book.  Getting the description and the behavior of the dog I visualized him perfectly.  Butch was fun to read about and a good factor to bring Riley and Regina together.

Heartbreakers by Lori Foster

Heartbreakers is the collection of Lori Fosters two books in the series Men to the Rescue and let me say they are definitely hearbreakers that will take away your breath in “Treat Her Right” and “Mr. November”.

“Treat Her Right”

“Gorgeous, statuesque fitness expert Wynn Lane can’t help but fall for her sexy neighbor, paramedic Zack Granger, and his adorable daughter.  But brash, outspoken Wynn is not Zack’s idea of mommy material, even though she’s making daddy’s libido do flip-flops.  Still, the laws of attraction rule-and Wynn is a force of nature all her own!”

This story was fantastic to read.  I loved Zack’s little girl Dani.  She was the sweetest little girl and I loved how Wynn took to the little girl automatically.  Zack and Wynn’s attraction was very steamy from the beginning to the end.  Her family and the friends made the story comical and realistic.

“Mr. November”

“Creating a beefcake calender for charity.  Amanda Barker has found the perfect Mr. November, super-buff firefighter Josh Marshall.  But the notorious ladies man is a hard sell, and she’s forced to negotiate with the only collateral he’ll accept: a date with her!  Josh knows where there’s smoke, there’s life-but this could burn completely out of control…”

Josh and Amanda were a dynamic pair with all the  bantering they did together.  The man thing that was argumented was how Josh wanted her in his bed and Amanda kept refusing him.  Even though she can’t stand the sight of him with other women she wouldn’t give in.  I loved the fact that Josh the womanizer has fallen for the one girl who didn’t automatically throw herself at his feet.  I was waiting for his turn at love.

Lori Foster creates real life men in these real situations and makes you care what happens to them.  These two books left me smiling, laughing at the outrageous behavior of the men and hoping to find a real life man to the rescue.

Lori Foster’s “The Watson Brothers”

Okay I loved these brothers Sam, Gil, and Pete that Lori Foster created, they are hilarious and sensual.  The idea behind the book, “The Watson Brothers” again has three short stories that follow each of these brothers as they live their lives but end up finding love in the bargain.  The women showing up in their lives were just what they needed.

The first story “My House, My Rules” follows Sam Watson the oldest.  He is a tough undercover cop and is thrown together with Ariel who he thinks was his youngest brothers, Pete, ex girlfriend.  Ariel is a 24 year old and never had those thoughts about Peter only Sam.  She was so in love with him that she would do anything to be with him.  Secretly Sam wants her badly as well but he can’t show it until Ariel gives him no choice.

Those two characters battle it out but are so great together.  Their chemistry is steamy and I thought it was very funny how Ariel will not back down from Sam.  She likes to throw herself at Sam hoping that it will wear him down.

The second story is “Bringing Up Baby” is about Gil Watson the middle brother.  As his older brother Sam, Gil also has been known to be a man of many woman.  His last real relationship was with a woman three years ago, Shelly, which to disbelief has produced a daughter, Nicole.  Shelly’s roommate Anabel has been bringing up the child as her own.  He is contacted as by Anabel.  Shelly is dead and Anabel needs Gil’s help.  Anabel wants Gil’s help but she wants him as well, has wanted him for three years.  She hopes that Gil would find a way to love her.

I loved Anabel’s character.  She fights for the ones she loves and will do anything she needs.  Gil is loveable and a man that needs a strong woman to help, which he finds with Anabel’s help.

The last story is “Good With His Hands”.  Pete the youngest brother has his turn.  He has dated over and over but the one girl he wants is Cassidy McClannahan.  He has known her about a year but has stayed in the friend zone.  Pete didn’t know it but Cassidy harbored his exact feelings.  She wanted him just as bad but she was sensible.  Finally she threw caution into the wind when Peter asked to kiss her.

I liked the fact that with Pete’s story the Watson brothers have moved on five years later.  The other brothers are all now married and starting family leaving Pete to find his love.  Over all the Watson brothers were highly entertaining along with the ones attached and very fun to read.
