Christobel Smyth had grown up in a certain life style but after her father died they were not as well off as they had been. Christobel was still a lady but she was not looking for a suitor. Thanks to her sister that was what she was going to get when she attends a house party.
John Leyden had not wanted to go to the house party because then he would see Christobel. He had wanted her since he first had seen her but he was not in her class. He always felt out of place but with the house party he will see that he and Christobel could have a chance.
Swept Away is a novella by Kristina Cook. It has been a while since I read anything by Kristina Cook and I have to say that I liked the book but for me I did have a little problem with Christobel. Her character was a little annoying in the beginning as she was acting like she was better than John. What helped was she really did not mean anything by it. She acted first then thought about what she should have done. Once I got into the novella I got to see that she was kind and thoughtful. John’s character was not one to express his thoughts well. I wanted to shake him and just shout at him to talk to her, instead of just giving her an expression of annoyance. He does warm up but it takes a little time.
With this being a novella, a lot of things are happening quickly. I thought this would have been a good story to be a novel. I wanted more background with both of the characters which would give them more depth.
Adam Rutledge, Viscount d’Arque was in his carriage with his grandmother when their wheel was broken. Adam will be fortuntate that they were close to another house. He found out it was St. Johns which was less than perfect as Sarah St. John was in the house. She had a very low opinion of him.
Sarah St. John hated rakes which was what Adam was, though as the days go by with them at being together Sarah started to feel something for him. She started to see that he was not just a rake.
Once Upon a Christmas Eve is the second book to the Maiden Lane Novella series by Elizabeth Hoyt. I liked this novella. I thought it was a sweet addition and perfect for the Christmas season.
Sarah’s character had a very poor view of men especially rakes because of her past. She will be shown that some rakes were not so bad. That they had layers underneath their mischievous ways. Adam’s character was more than he appeared. He had a tragic story with his parents which helped explain his desire never to settle down. I liked Adam for the most part. I thought at times he was a little too pushy with the teasing but in the end he redeems himself.
Sir Charles had been courting Lady Norwood but she was oblivious to his attempts. Charles knew that he had to step up his attempts and he will get the chance with the help of Sally’s niece.
Lady Norwood, Sally, was escorting her niece Meg. Sally was happy with the season especially as Meg had a suitor, Sir Charles. Sally thought they would be a good match but she was conflicted as she wanted him, though she knew she could never have him.
Charming Sir Charles is the fifth novella to the series Dashing Widows by Anna Campbell. I was a little disappointed with this novella. It really didn’t have anything to do with the plot as I liked the idea of the plot. A younger man (only by four years) was wanting a mature woman instead of a school lady who would be eighteen. This plot had promise but for me it was slow going and not as fun as the other. The reason for me was Sally’s character. I thought Sally was a good woman and was trying to do what was right but she was so unsure. She drove me a little crazy with the switch of wanting Charles and then not wanting him. I just wanted her to make the decision. I also just wasn’t connecting with her character.
After reading this one from Anna Campbell I am hoping that the sixth novella from the Dashing Widows will be better. When the sixth story comes out I will give it a try and hope for the best.
Charlotte Highwood had no desire to marry at least not until she went on her trip with her best friend. Though Charlotte’s plan will quickly be in trouble when she will be found alone with Lord Granville. Charlotte’s only option is to find the couple who had really been having the tryst.
Piers Brandon, Lord Granville, was on a mission but he will be interrupted when Charlotte burst into the room. Things will quickly spiral out of control but instead of being angry Piers feels himself falling for Charlotte.
Do You Want to Start a Scandal is the fifth book to the series Spindle Cove by Tessa Dare. I really liked this book. I had been waiting for Charlotte’s story since I started reading Spindle Cove series.
Charlotte’s character I found silly but I was okay with that since that was how she was throughout the series. She had been young when this series started now she is a woman and she is trying to avoid marriage for a year. She doesn’t always go about it the correct way but it ends up funny. I really liked Piers. To society to he was a quiet and boring peer. Of course that is the opposite of Piers. I liked that Charlotte brought out a playful side of Piers that he had hidden away.
The mystery behind the real couple that was having the tryst was funny especially when you found out who it had been.
I don’t know if Tessa Dare will have any more from Spindle Cove but if she does I will definitely read it.
Lady Marianne Seaton had been jilted by a Duke but as the lady she was she made the most of it. She smiled towards society and moved on with her life. That life would soon change as her father had all but told her she would marry a man he picked out but the man that has Marianne wanting more was Elias Thorne.
Three Proposals and a Scandal looks to end the series Sons of Sin by Anna Campbell. Although, you never know if more will be written on this series. So I really liked this novella. I was wondering if Marianne would have her own story.
So the story is simple, Marianne is being courted by three men. Lord Desborough, the man her father wanted her to marry. Then there is Lord Tranter, who Marianne didn’t exactly trust. Lastly, was Elias Thorne who was the man Marianne didn’t want to want. He is of course the man that I was cheering for because he was not the fortune hunter everyone thought he was. Elias’s character was a man in love with Marianna. He loved her for the woman she was hiding, not for her fortune. I liked Marianne’s character. She was a dutiful daughter but there was another side to her than the good society miss. I liked that Campbell had Marianne fighting an inner battle inside her. She did not just fall into Elias’s arms and pledge her undying love. Elias has to work for it and Marianne had to learn to trust.
The other two suitors were the complete opposite of each other, one a villain and the other a good man. The villain was a horrible man and I liked how Campbell ended his story. There was then her father who almost was like a villain. He didn’t believe his daughter when she told him the truth. His pride was too strong but it wouldn’t be a line severed forever. So, I ended up really liking the good suitor and kind of hope that Anna Campbell writes a story where he will find the woman he can love. Though it that doesn’t happen I’m still very satisfied with how the story concluded.
Cecily Hale has waited for Luke Trenton for four years. Her love never disappeared for this man even though he had changed. Cecily will make sure that Luke knows it is safe for them to be together, that her love for him will never leave.
How to Catch a Wild Viscount is a novella written by Tessa Dare. I liked this book. Although I will have to say it wasn’t in the same category of the Spindle Cove series, which I loved. I thought that the novella could have been given more detail regarding these two characters. A little more back story, though you get the story between them within the novella.
I liked Cecily. At first I wondered if she was just going to be a naive girl but she was a mature woman who knew who she wanted to be with. She had grown up and was compassionate for others around her. Luke was tortured with what he had gone through in the last four years. He had been like a beast when he had to kill others who were out to kill him. He felt that he wasn’t right for Cecily even though he did want her.
There was also a legend that was within the story of a beast that these friends are on the hunt for and that gets Cecily into some trouble. Though she will be rescued by a different kind of beast.
Julia Hargrove was from England, the year was 1893. She was going with her family to Scotland to the Dunraven castle. She will not want to be at castle especially as her room seems to be haunted. Julia will find out that it is not haunted but that time shifts and she comes face to face with a warrior, Rae MacKinnon, back in 1390.
A Slip in Time is a book from Kathleen Kirkwood. I was impressed with this book.
So I don’t read many time travel books just because I am not always interested in them. It usually is that the writing is not that great or the style of how the book is written. Well I had no complaints when I read the book from Kathleen Kirkwood. I was immediately pulled into the story and did not want to stop reading.
Immediately I liked Julia’s character, I thought she was written well. I liked that was scared and heartbroken, but she had a backbone when it came to doing what she needed. Then there was Rae who was a man that was a laird of his clansmen. He was a warrior but not just all brawn, he was smart and cautious. He was also very sensual especially when it came to Julia. I loved the romance that bloomed between them but in the back of my mind I wondered how would it last when you knew that the slip in time would eventually close.
I thought that Kirkwood wrote the time traveling parts very well. I was intrigued with how she made the time traveling happened, how it progressed and that it had happened before. So for those who want a very well done time traveling book try A Slip in Time.
