Do you remember those amazing choose your own adventure books? I know I do and they were books which I loved when I was a kid. Well imagine my surprise years later I would read another choose your own adventure, yet this time its with a romance. My Lady’s Choosing by Kitty Curran and Larissa Zageris which is an interactive romance story.
Alright, now its been a while since I posted because I have just not been inspired to write. I have read some great books but I just didn’t want to write. Personally I think I was just tired about writing about books and needed a break. But when I found out about this book, My Lady’s Choosing, by a librarian friend and the moment I heard about it I had to check it out and write about it. I was so excited about reading this book I made sure to follow each adventure the book presented.
So the concept of the book is that the reader is the heroine and you will get to choose you own adventure. You might travel to Egypt and find love and adventure. You could stay as a companion and solve a mystery that surrounded the man you loved. Perhaps you might find love in the arms of a Scotsman. Or love from a broken man. With each situation there are several opportunities to go a different route.
I will say these stories are not the most amazing things I have read as they are cliche but they are fun and I love the nostalgic feeling of this book. My Lady’s Choosing was very engaging and I really hope that there will be another written by these authors as I think they did a great job with this interactive story. If no others are written I might just have to find some choose your own adventures from my childhood.
For those who want to read a fun romance story try out My Lady’s Choosing.
Miss Catherine Hooks is a well known governess but it is time for her to move on from her post. She will make sure to do it quickly as it looks like her employer wants more.
Edward Glennon did not want his governess to leave. He was finding that his life would not be complete without her in it, now he just has to convince her.
A Right Honorable Gentleman is a novella by Courtney Milan. I liked this novella but I wanted more from this story. This novella was short and I mean short. I read this story in about twenty minutes. I have nothing against short stories and I know that Courtney Milan can write a great story but this needed more.
I think that if this was a longer novella to novel everything would come together nicely as it did in this story but there would be more depth to the story. You would then feel more for these characters and really cheer for Catherine and Edward to find that love and passion they had kept from each other.
I decided to try another Courtney Milan novella, What Happened at Midnight, which I am reading next.
Calista Langley operated a business that helped single men and women find someone they could possible be with. Her business was going well with the help of her brother but she was plagued with someone who was watching her. When she receives her third gift she will get help from an author who will help find her stalker.
Trent Hastings was an accomplished author and he had come to Calista’s to make sure she was not a fraud as his sister was Calista’s client. Trent will find himself intrigued by Calista and he will find himself helping with her stalker issue.
‘Til Death Do Us Part is a novel by Amanda Quick. I really liked this novel. I will say that at times I thought the transitions were a little abrupt. I wanted more details with the characters. I also found the romance between Trent and Calista was not a big part of the novel like it is with some of her other novels. Though I will say that didn’t really bother me, it was more of an observation. What I really liked was that they had formed a partnership to help each other with the case, that brought me back to an earlier series Lavinia Lake/Tobias March.
Calista’s character was a business woman. I liked Calista because she had endured and was resourceful. She was level headed and did not believe in romance, not as she did as a young girl. I liked that her character stayed true till the very end. Although she did soften up a little. Trent’s character was interesting as he was a writer. I liked that he took on the style of his character when trying to solve the case.
With the side characters I wanted to know more about them. I really liked Trent’s sister and Calista’s brother. With Trent’s sister it looks like her story is finished but I wonder about Andrew. It would be interesting if he got his own story as he started his own detective agency.
Now in Quick’s style of mystery she certainly had me guessing about who the villain was which I liked though it was short lived as I guessed who the villain was pretty quickly. Though there was a twist that had me rethinking my guess.
I am looking forward to reading the next novel by Amanda Quick which comes out in May of next year.
Lieutenant Colonel Liam MacKenzie was known as the Demon Highlander. He was known as a hard man but also a hero and a man to be respected. Liam wanted what was right for his children which was why he was searching for a governess. Though when Philomena comes he will be wanting to send her back as he felt an instant spark of desire. Liam knew to tread carefully with the governess especially as she was holding secrets.
Miss Philomena was on the run from her abusive husband and his sadistic ways. She will be rescued and given a new identity by her friends but she is unsure of where they sent her. The Laird looked dangerous but she will soon learn that he would never harm her or those he cared for.
The Highlander is the third novel to the series Victorian Rebels by Kerrigan Byrne. I really liked this one. There was a similar theme with the plot being darker and I was pulled in right away. The first two scenes that are written by the author are horrible and they tell how these characters have been treated. Both the characters had been misused and mistreated. Mena’s character has recently felt the mistreatment for the last five years while Liam had grown up with it. Mena was almost broken but she had been saved. I was happy that she was not broken and that she could stand up against the Laird even though he scared her at times. You got the sense that Mena was truly a strong willed woman, much stronger than anyone knew. Liam’s character you would think would have been cruel and he was to those on the battlefield but to those closest he was kind. Well he was as kind as he could be. It seemed that emotion was almost foreign to Liam, though with his childhood that could be understood. I really loved how Liam was with Mena. He was certainly in lust but he cared for her and wanted more from her than just a night together. He just had to get better addressing his feelings.
The bad guy was several people but the one that you wanted dead was certainly Mena’s husband who put her into the asylum.
The fourth book is coming out in February of 2017.
Sinclair McBride was a skilled barrister and took his job seriously. He had little time for anything but his job, even his children. His children were known to run wild and go through governess’s. Sinclair will find a solution has fallen into his lap when Bertie agreed to be the governess.
Roberta “Bertie” Frasier was from the gutters of England and was a thief. She will quickly find herself going from thief to governess as she will be hired by Sinclair McBride, a man she had tried to steal from. Though Bertie will find that she wouldn’t just be a governess but also the woman for Sinclair.
Rules for a Proper Governess is the seventh book to the series Mackenzies/Highland Pleasures. I really loved this book. I was swept right into the story.
Bertie’s character was lovable. She had a goodness about her even though she was a thief. She wanted to be better, always tried to help and cared greatly. Sinclair was a man that was drifting through life but he will get an awakening when Bertie comes into his life. I liked that he started to loosen up and had become the man he used to be.
The lust between the two of them was steamy and very passionate, and there was a lot of sex. I don’t think those scenes overwhelmed the book but they were very present. It made sense with Sinclair as he had been a man that had run wild. He let himself live again with Bertie.
I loved the children, Andrew and Cat. They were adorable and starved for attention for their father. They will get along with Bertie because she takes the time to get to know them. If Jennifer Ashley keeps writing the series I hope she will will write some stories on the children of these McBrides and Mackenzies.
I have only one more to read which is The Mackenzie Clan Gathering.
Tasia was able to escape her prison and flee from Russia to England. She will find help in her distant cousin who will get her a job as a governess. She needs to stay hidden from those who would take her back. As a governess she thought she would be safe but her employer, Lord Luke Stokehurst, tempts her and she finds that she will want more though she cannot reach for it.
Lord Luke Stokehurst loved his deceased wife and would never marry anyone else. He wanted it to be just himself and his daughter. When the new governess comes to them he knows that she is hiding more and Luke made it his mission to find out her secrets. Though as he spends more time with Tasia he finds that he wants the woman he was coming to know.
Midnight Angel is the first book to the series Stokehurst by Lisa Kleypas. So I really liked this book but I will say the beginning did not grab me right away. I kept going because I knew that I would find myself enjoying the book once I got further into it, and of course that was what happened.
Tasia was a very young woman of eighteen but she was very mature for her age. She was strong willed but there was definitely a softness about her that was very kind to others. Luke had stopped living when his wife had died. With Tasia in his life he started to live his life again. He wanted things and it helped that Tasia truly understood what he had gone through as she lived her own tragedy.
There was a mystery within the book which was what happened when Tasia blacked out. She remembers waking up and holding a bloody knife which is covered in her cousin’s blood. You wonder if Tasia did indeed kill the cousin but in reality you know that it is another person who did the deed. The question was who? Kleypas will give an answer and justice for these characters that will have you satisfied.
I thought that it was interesting that there was a little supernatural mixed into the book. Tasia had visions or dreams of things that will be happening in the future. There is a little vision that happens at the end which make you wonder if that will come true. I will find out in the second book which I will be reading next.
Annabelle Quinn was orphaned as an infant never knowing her parents just that she was illegitimate. Annabelle will have a chance to leave her position as a teacher and become a governess. She jumped at the chance as this place treated her more like a servant. She will find joy helping the young Duke but will find that the Uncle of the Duke was catching her attention especially with his seductive ways.
Lord Simon Westbury had taken his nephew over as a ward when Nicholas’s parents were killed in an accident. Simon had not seen his brother in over ten years due to a betrayal and had become jaded. When the new governess is brought in he will find his eyes following her and wanting her to be his mistress.
If the Slipper Fits is the first book to the series Cinderella Sisterhood by Olivia Drake. Olivia Drake plays off the fairy tale Cinderella which I really liked. It has been a while since I have read a book by Olivia Drake and I remember liking her but when I read this book I really loved it. Her writing is fun and lighthearted.
The characters of Annabelle and Simon are well written and I liked them both right off. Simon seemed standoffish due to his past with his brother who is deceased but he does come to term with it and becomes a better man. It takes Annabelle to make him see that and change. Annabelle was like the Cinderella especially with her glass slippers. It was kind of funny as those really didn’t have any real part in the book that is except towards the end. I liked that it was the slippers that will be taken from Annabelle as she found the man she will love. So maybe the slippers are a way to bring love especially by a woman, Lady Milford, who wants to play matchmaker.
As the shoes were taken in the first book I have a feeling that you will read about them in the second book, but maybe not. I will find out as I have the second book, Stroke of Midnight, and I’m reading it next.
