Cold-Hearted Rake

Cold Hearted RakeDevon Ravenel doesn’t want the estate he was given but he would do what he could. Devon and with the help of his brother will reshape the estate and tenants. Devon will also pay attention to the former lady of the estate, he will pursue Kathleen until she gives in to his pursuit.

Lady Kathleen Trenear was wary of the new owner but she would do what she could to protect her sister-in-laws. Kathleen will be surprised when Devon will not sell the property but help it become profitable again. She will also be shocked by his effort to seduce, she will fight it but for only so long.

Cold-Hearted Rake is novel by Lisa Kleypas. I really loved this book. I was so happy that Lisa Kleypas is back with more of her historical romances. Though I will say it did take a little for me to get into the story, but once I was into the story I couldn’t wait to read the rest.

Devon’s character did not want the estate or the title that went with it but he softens especially when he starts interacting with Kathleen. He first came as someone who didn’t care and he really didn’t but he changes. I liked how Devon treats his cousins, he is definitely a softy when it comes to them. Kathleen’s character was definitely icy when it came to Devon and it made sense as she knew she would be kicked out of the house. Kathleen was also very protective which I liked though she was a little too determined to help, she didn’t ask if they needed it.

The fire between Devon and Kathleen is definitely there but they fight it. Devon fights it at first and only very little. Kathleen will be fighting it with everything she has, but she will give in.

There is another story that is happening with Helen and Winterborne, and I am curious with what is the deal with Winterborne. I wasn’t sure I would like him but at the end you know there is more to the man than what you see. I can’t wait to read their story which has come out and I am on the list for.

Not Quite a Lady

Not Quite a LadyLady Charlotte Hayward had made a mistake ten years ago and for that she knows to remain unwed. She will have accomplished that task but now a neighbor is showing her things could be different. She will start to relent and find that her past is catching up with her.

Darius Carsington is a smart rake who knows when to stay away from an innocent but with Charlotte something inside him changes. He will be pulled into the families life and will be getting to know Charlotte better and better.

Not Quite a Lady is from Loretta Chase. This book is considered to be part of two series Fallen Women and Carsington. I have read two books from this author beforehand and loved them. After reading this one I wasn’t loving it. It was entertaining and kept me going but I wasn’t pulled into the story as I would have liked to be.

There was nothing really wrong with Charlotte with the exception she just gave up her child. Of course at sixteen in her time that would make her an outcast but with her families support it would have been something that could have been handled. Darius was a good guy even though he was a rake. I guess the thing is it was a little on the dull side every now and then.

Now although this was not my favorite from Loretta Chase I am looking forward to getting the third book from the Dressmakers series which will be released in June of this year.

Mistress by Midnight

Mistress by MidnightMerryn Fenner had revenge on her mind since Garrick Northesk killed her brother in a duel. She will be getting her chance but a problem will occur when her thoughts start to drift romantically towards Garrick.

Garrick Northesk wanted to make amends for the past for the sisters who he ruined by killing their brother. Garrick will though have a secret he must hold on to as too many people would be hurt over the news.

Mistress of Midnight was more than I had thought when I first started reading, but it seems that all the books from the series Scandalous Women of the Ton have that element. Nicola Cornick does a good job writing Merryn’s and Garrick’s character and how their past and present are connected without them knowing all the details.

First of all I loved this book. There was anguish and guilt from both characters that had driven them to do penance for years. You don’t understand for what reasons right away but Cornick will slowly give us clues until the very end when you will know everything.

The love story within the story is not an easy thing. There are certainly steamy scenes in the story but the path is not an easy one. Of course once you get to that point Cornick romances Merryn and Garrick’s relationship.

What I have found out throughout the series is that Mr. Churchward, the lawyer, has always been there in the background helping someway. He does the same with Merryn to help her find the truth without telling her.

Now that I am done with the series leaving me now to go on a search for another series from Nicola Cornick.

A Lady Awakened

Martha Russell is newly widowed and is in danger of loosing everything around her if she isn’t pregnant with an heir. Martha knows she is not pregnant but will turn to her neighbor to help fix that problem.

Theophilus Mirkwood is intrigued by the proposal but took it on regardless. For one month he would be used as a stud to help Martha.

A Lady AwakenedCecilia Grant’s first book to the Blackshear Family is A Lady Awakened.¬†When I first started it didn’t really grab my attention and throughout the rest of the story I just couldn’t get into it. I became a little bored with the way the story was turning out. It really had to do with Martha’s character. I understand that she did not relish in the ways of the bedroom as with her late husband it was not all to be desired. She stayed passive and reserved in all ways. It got a little annoying as you hoped that she would be like the title and awaken to these feelings. She does finally at the end but I felt it needed to come at a much earlier part of the story.

I got the second book at the same time so I will read it. Hears hoping I will like it better.

Return of the Viscount

Cecilia Mallory needed to marry to be able to control her money and take care of her brother and the estate. Cecilia imagined her husband to be an elder man and is stricken when she meets a young vibrant man. She will rethink the marriage to her husband but with every touch will send shivers down her spine. She will be distracted as she fears her life is starting to be in danger when accidents keep happening to her.

Viscount Michael Blackthorne was intrigued by the letter to marry his commanders daughter. As he felt he owed his commander Michael agreed. He was speechless six months later to be facing his wife he married by proxy. She was a beautiful woman and not an aged spinster he thought she would be. Michael will want to make this marriage real in all ways as every moment he spends in her company, but soon his mind will be on the accidents that keep happening to Cecilia.

Return of the ViscountSo I once again judged a book by his cover but it wasn’t for the picture only the name of the author. I thought it would be fun to read this author who spells her name as mine. When I was younger everyone of my friends and teachers would always spell my name Gail never Gayle, and I would hardly ever see my name spelled that way. So a few years ago I kept finding my name spelled Gayle of authors for their first or last name. This was the first time I saw Gayle Callen’s book and took in on a whim to read.

Since I had not read the summary page of this book I was pleasantly surprised how much I liked the book. I thought the characters seemed real like the relationship between brother and sister along with the only just meeting husband and wife. Oliver the brother was spoiled and guilt ridden which made his character interesting. You wanted him to grow up but as Callen uncovers the truth about Oliver you cheer for him. Then there is Michael who was very much the solider but who was also just a good man. He had hidden guilt which you can guess. Now Cecilia I really liked as she was a woman on a mission. She got things done and took care of everything. I was intrigued by the fact who would want to hurt this woman. Now the plot was simple as it was mainly about Cecilia doing what she can to help her brother. Callen brings in a sinister part when the accidents start happening. Personally I had no idea who would be plotting to harm or kill Cecilia so Callen did a good job at the surprise. I will definitely revisit Callen for another one of her books.
