The Longest Night

Mary Cameron, a Highland widow, was helping her best friends daughter get out into society. Mary missed her home in Scotland but she wanted to help. She will shocked to see Valentin, who was a man and something more. She had helped heal him back in Scotland and never thought she would see him again.

Baron Valentin, a Nvengarian bodyguard, was sent to be a bodyguard for an Ambassador and his wife of Nvengaria. He was on a mission but that will not take his complete attention away from searching for Mary. He wanted to find the woman he loved.

The Longest Night is the fourth story to the series Nvengaria by Jennifer Ashley. It had been a while since I read the other three stories from the series but I was quickly brought into the novella and enjoyed it. I wish it was a little longer. I wanted Mary and Valentin to get more to their story but what they got was enough to make a great story.

Mary was a widow and a woman in her thirties. She thinks she is over the hill and too old to be running away with a man. She was afraid to step out of place, but she was stronger than she knew. I liked that she became more brave and took that chance. Valentin was a bodyguard and a shapeshifter. He was loyal to the Prince and Grand Duke, although that was not always the case which was shown in the previous books. I really liked Valentin, he was a good match for Mary to shake up her stiffness and let her enjoy life and not be afraid of passion. It was also interesting to learn about him and the tragedy that feel upon his sister.

The mystery of who was shooting after who was intriguing and it kept me invested in the story. I wanted to get answers and find the villain. The Longest Night was a great addition to the Nvengaria series.

Alec Mackenzie’s Art of Seduction

Alec Mackenzie was in search of his brother, Will. He disguised himself as a French painter who was to teach Lady Celia, whose father was thought to have information on his brother. Alec was to get that information any way but he found that he could not use Lady Celia. Instead he will help her and surprisingly she will help him

Lady Celia had lived through scandal and was suffering the consequences. She was instructed to learn to paint portraits and she was to learn by a Mr. Finn. Celia will soon learn that all was not what it seemed when he it came to Mr. Finn.

Alec Mackenzie’s Art of Seduction is the ninth book to the series Mackenzie’s and McBrides by Jennifer Ashley. I really loved this book. Though whenever I read anything with the Mackenzies I will almost always love the book.

Alec was a warrior and playing a part to help find information on his brother who had been captured. Alec is a good man who will do anything for his family. Though he does stop before any harm could be done to Celia. I liked that he did not lie to her for long. They made a good team as they worked together to find Alec’s brother Will. I loved that Alec really did treat Celia as an equal. Celia was a good daughter. She was not the spoiled girl that everyone thought. She had lived through years of her mother ordering about and a scandal that had happened because of her mother. Celia tried her best but I was happy to read that she was spreading her wings and taking chances. I did not want her to be weak because that was how English ladies were supposed to act.

The mystery behind Will’s capture was intriguing and of course it sets up for the next book which will feature Will Mackenzie.

A Pirate for Christmas

A Pirate for ChristmasBess Farrar was the vicar’s daughter and was used to helping the villagers in the small town. She will find herself with a problem when the new earl comes to their town as he was not writing her any reply’s to her letters. Bess will take it upon herself and meet the new earl only to be shocked at the instant attraction to him.

Lord Channing, Rory, just inherited his brothers earldom. He liked his life as a captain but knew that his life had to change. Rory will do his duty and take over. He will find that the task will not be such a hardship especially when he meets Bess.

A Pirate for Christmas is a novella from Anna Campbell. I really liked this novella. I thought that it was a fun Christmas story filled with lust, love, and some humor.

The character of Bess was a strong woman as she helped everyone in the village, but there is a sensual side to Bess. That side was not know to her until she meets Rory. When it comes to Rory she is unsure, although she has no need to be unsure of Rory’s feelings. So then there is the character of Rory who was a man that was not used to the privileged life. I liked that about him because he was not stuck up and had a good sense of humor. He was also very sensual when it comes to Bess.

This lust which is really love between the characters was sweet throughout the book. Its funny that with the books that I have read from Campbell the scenes are very steamy, but this was almost PG rated between them. That was not a problem for me. I liked that in this novella a romance builds.

So, I decided to keep going with Anna Campbell’s books and I will be reading The Seduction of Lord Stone next.

An Heiress for All Seasons

An Heiress for all SeasonsViolet Howard did not want a husband who had a title. She wanted her father’s man of affairs but she was forced to come to England. Violet will be surprised by the Earl of Merlton and will find herself liking him, but she will try to avoid him.

Earl of Merlton, Will, did not want to marry but found that he will have to for financial reasons. He will be surprised by his mothers latest potential bride as Violet will be the first woman he was interested in marrying. He will have to work hard to woo his potential bride.

An Heiress for All Seasons is the 1.5 novella from the Debutante Files series by Sophie Jordan. I thought that this was a fun and quick novella.

Will’s character was a player but not a cruel one. He did right by his family and that meant he would marry for money. I liked that Will didn’t declare that he loved Violet right away because it wasn’t true, though love will bloom and rather quickly. Now Violet’s character was determined not to marry a man she didn’t want and I liked that she was not backing down the moment that she saw Will. She will but there will be some persuading. I will say that she was persuaded rather quickly to forget the man that she claimed to want. Of course that is because this is a novella and everything has to move fast to get to the end, and the ending was great especially with how Will proved himself to be truly a good guy.

I am reading the second book next.

A Midnight Clear

A Midnight ClearTroy Davenport had left his family and the family business to pursue art which had been his calling. His art will lead him to many places and to his next muse, Miranda Granger. He will want more than anything to paint her but Troy had to convince her.

Miranda Granger had been ruined nine years ago only no one knew that fact. Miranda keeps herself distant from any man that might want more from her. She will be very weary when it came to Troy but she found he was bringing back emotions that had long ago buried.

A Midnight Clear is the first book to the series Edwardian Nights by Kristina Cook. I really loved this novel. Kristina Cook writes so that you love the characters, so that you connect with them through the good and bad things that happen to them.

I liked Miranda’s characters as she felt real. She had made a mistake and for the past 10 years she was not allowed to really forget that. She is almost like a doormat but underneath there is a woman with fire and courage to live again. It takes a charming painter to bring that out of her. Troy was that charming painter. He was a rogue but not in a villainous way or one that flaunted his affairs. If anything Troy almost lived under the radar which made sense as he wanted to be known as Troy the painter and not be connected to his wealthy family.

So within this novel there are no real enemies but I will say that I really disliked Gertie. I thought at first she was just immature. Well she is that but she is also vengeful when it comes to her older sister. I really didn’t like that Kristina Cook didn’t give us some conclusion with Gertie getting into trouble. I did like how Cook ended the book but I wanted to know that Gertie wouldn’t get away with what she had done.

Well I am done with reading Kristina Cook’s at least for now. I hope that she will continue with this series and maybe the next person will be with Caroline.

Scandal in Spring

Scandal in SpringDaisy Bowman is being forced to wed in two months to a titled gentleman otherwise her father will make her marry is protege, Matthew Swift. Daisy has no desire to marry Matthew who was just like her father. Though as she spends time with him she will find that he is not the overbearing man she thought.

Matthew Swift has wanted Daisy Bowman since he began working with her father. He knew that she would never be his which is why he never tried to pursue her, though that will change. He will take that step towards Daisy but is still afraid his past will find him.

Scandal in Spring is the fourth book to the series Wallflowers by Lisa Kleypas which was another fantastic book. The story is simple but the characters are entertaining which is what I always look for in books. I like my characters to have some life in them.

Daisy was probably the nicest member of the wallflowers which made me want to cheer for her all the more to find the perfect man. I was happy to read that she would be finding that man, it just happened to be in an unexpected person, Matthew. Now Matthew’s character was one of a very good man. I liked that he was not at all sinister like the sisters described him to be, instead he was a good man who was kind, had some humor and was in love with Daisy. I liked their banter back and fourth which was little but memorable especially when they played a game together. What they had going for each other, other than strong feelings, was the attraction which sizzled between them though at the same time it was sweet.

Alright now the mystery of Matthew’s past was something that was hinted about but nothing was never revealed until that moment at the end. I was wondering what was so bad in Matthew’s past that he was afraid of it coming out. When it was revealed I thought it wasn’t as bad as it could have been. I was happy that the secret did not reveal that Matthew was a bad person.

I am finishing off the series with the last book, A Wallflower Christmas, which I am reading next.

Midnight Angel

Midnight AngelTasia was able to escape her prison and flee from Russia to England. She will find help in her distant cousin who will get her a job as a governess. She needs to stay hidden from those who would take her back. As a governess she thought she would be safe but her employer, Lord Luke Stokehurst, tempts her and she finds that she will want more though she cannot reach for it.

Lord Luke Stokehurst loved his deceased wife and would never marry anyone else. He wanted it to be just himself and his daughter. When the new governess comes to them he knows that she is hiding more and Luke made it his mission to find out her secrets. Though as he spends more time with Tasia he finds that he wants the woman he was coming to know.

Midnight Angel is the first book to the series Stokehurst by Lisa Kleypas. So I really liked this book but I will say the beginning did not grab me right away. I kept going because I knew that I would find myself enjoying the book once I got further into it, and of course that was what happened.

Tasia was a very young woman of eighteen but she was very mature for her age. She was strong willed but there was definitely a softness about her that was very kind to others. Luke had stopped living when his wife had died. With Tasia in his life he started to live his life again. He wanted things and it helped that Tasia truly understood what he had gone through as she lived her own tragedy.

There was a mystery within the book which was what happened when Tasia blacked out. She remembers waking up and holding a bloody knife which is covered in her cousin’s blood. You wonder if Tasia did indeed kill the cousin but in reality you know that it is another person who did the deed. The question was who? Kleypas will give an answer and justice for these characters that will have you satisfied.

I thought that it was interesting that there was a little supernatural mixed into the book. Tasia had visions or dreams of things that will be happening in the future. There is a little vision that happens at the end which make you wonder if that will come true. I will find out in the second book which I will be reading next.
