The Cakes of Wrath

Rita Lucero will be forced to go to a community meeting as she has a temporary seat on the board. Things will start to escalate when Rita will be almost hit by a van. Rita will start to wonder if the van was meant for her or someone else, especially when Destiny will be found dead a couple days later.

The Cakes of Wrath is the fourth book to the series A Piece of Cake Mystery by Jacklyn Brady. I enjoyed the book. Although at times I wish that Rita was not so curious because it is getting to the point of unbelievable. With all that she had gone through you would think that she would try and avoid situations that had a dead body. Though without her curious nature the book would not be the same.

I thought it was interesting getting the community together in this book. You got to know a lot more characters and understand the town a little better. I thought it added to the mystery of Destiny’s murder. There were a lot more suspects to wonder about.

I was a little disappointed that Sullivan was not in the picture. Gabriel is the main guy and I wonder if he will be with Rita. For some reason I just don’t like him and hope at the end of the series she is with Sullivan.

The characters that were driving me crazy and they were supposed to were Detective Winslow and Pearl, and even Miss Frankie. The detective was going after Rita and it really sounded like he had a grudge against her which I am not sure why he did. Pearl was just immature. She always seemed to get her own way and not worry about anything. Then there is Miss Frankie, she getting to the point of overbearing with doing things she thinks she could do without asking others their opinion.

Even with the dislike of some of the characters I am reading the fifth book next.

Dirty Sexy Cuffed

Levi Kincaid liked control in his everyday life and especially in the bedroom. He will find his world getting twisted around when he meets Sarah. He will want her more than any woman he ever had and he will protect her at all cost.

Sarah Robins was on the run from her ex-boyfriend and the cult that had taken her in. She was trying to get her life together when Levi shows up in her life. She knows that nothing can come of a relationship but Sarah will give in anyways.

Dirty Sexy Cuffed is the third book to the series Dirty Sexy by Carly Phillips and Erika Wilde. This was another book to the series that was very enjoyable. These books for me are very quick reads. I will say that I wouldn’t have minded a little more on the cult aspect. I think it would have added a little more to the story.

Levi’s character thrived in life with control. He avoided anything that would make him lose his control. I liked that with Sarah in his life he was letting go. Levi’s dominant control was always going to be there but he was softening. Sarah’s character was a young woman who needed help but she was too proud to ask and weary of strangers. I liked that Sarah was able to take a chance with Levi though he had to work hard to gain her trust.

This series has one more book which will be about Clay’s twin brother. I am thinking that this brother will be a surprise to the others as throughout the last three books no twin brother had been mentioned. I am reading Dirty Sexy Sinner next.

Discovering You

Discovering YouIndia Sommers had lived through a tragedy eleven months ago when her husband was murder in front of her eyes. She was trying to move on with her life but things were not working out for India especially when her husbands killer was free. She will find herself getting help from a neighbor.

Rod Amos was curious about his neighbor. He was instantly attracted to her but it wasn’t just sex he wanted. He wanted to know India and to help her anyway that he could. Rod will quickly find himself involved with India’s past that was still causing problems.

Discovering You is the tenth book in the series Whiskey Creek by Brenda Novak. I liked the book. It was more towards suspense which wasn’t a bad thing. I was wondering if I would dislike it as it was back with the Amos brothers but I found myself liking it.

India’s character was someone who had been tormented when her past boyfriend killed her husband. Because of this tragedy India was broken and scared. I could understand this especially with what she was made to do, but at times India bugged me. I wanted her to stand up more for herself, not at the murder but later in the book. Though she will find her voice in the book. Rod’s character was all around good guy who just happened to be the perfect example of a bad boy. I liked that Rod was but he was very much reformed and with India he wanted it all with her.

India’s parents in law were not the warmest of families. They were pretty cruel to her and treated like she was trash. This was all because India’s past was very colorful with indiscretions. She made a lot of bad choices and one of them had been dating Sebastian a long time ago, who was the man that killed her husband. I got the feeling that they really did love her as a daughter in law, but again they had just lost their son. They wanted to blame someone. The only redeeming quality was that they seemed to care for Cassie, their grandchild.

I am done for now with the series but figure more will be written especially with two more of the Amos brothers out there.

New Orleans

New OrleansRose Thayer was the maid of honor for her best friend.  She arrived in New Orleans expecting the usual wedding events but she will find herself being sent to the bachelor party as a stripper to find out if the groom will cheat.

New Orleans is the first book to the series Sex, Lies & Wedding Cake by Cat Johnson. Alright, I liked the novella for the most part but I felt that the author could have a lot done more. The transitions between the scenes were too quick, and it seemed that I was missing pieces. I wanted more to the story, for her to flush out the characters. I wanted to know more about Rose and Tim, but all we got was a strange situation and sex. Still there were funny moments, I just wanted more.

I am going to continue with the other two books of the series as I am curious about what will happen next.

Garden of Lies

Garden of LiesUrsula Kern owns Kern Secretarial Agency with a couple of employees. When one of her employee ends up dead and Ursula knows it wasn’t suicide. She will go in search of answers from Anne’s last employment, she will find help from Slater Roxton her last employer. She will quickly learn that darker things were happening in the house.

Slater Roxton had been trapped on an island for one year which changed his life. Getting back to his normal routine was not going to happen so Slater changed his ways. Instead of fitting in with society he became an oddity. When Ursula comes into his life he knows that he doesn’t want to part from her, which leads him on a quest to help find her employees murderer.

Garden of Lies is a novel by Amanda Quick. I really loved this book. Amanda Quick aka Jayne Ann Krentz has been a favorite of mine for many years. The plot immediately intrigued me and I was pulled right into the story.

Ursula’s character was a woman who had a career and worked hard at it. I liked Ursula’s conviction to do the right thing. She was a strong woman who wanted to do the right thing but she was also someone who acted first, thought second. With Ursula’s character she is hiding something which of course will come out though more towards the middle. Slater’s character was an oddity but that was what I liked about him. He was quiet and thoughtful but could be ruthless if needed to be.

The villain was clear in my mind but then things got twisted. That usually happens in an Amanda Quick novel. I thought she wrote the twist well.

Saint Anything

Saint AnythingSydney, and her family, were dealing with the aftermath of Peyton, her brothers, mistake which destroys a life. Sydney knows that she has to play the perfect daughter, to fade into the background but she will then meet the Chatham family who really sees her.

Saint Anything is a novel by Sarah Dessen. I really loved this book. I have not read anything from Dessen for about five years. Its not that I don’t like her writing because I do. I thought Lock & Key was amazing. I think that Dessen is a wonderful storyteller. I think why I didn’t go rushing back to the author is the fact it is for young adults. Though why I should go back is because she gets you with the emotional turmoil that she writes well. Its not just teen angst, its deeper and you feel what those characters are feeling, and I felt for the character of Sydney. Though this was not doom and gloom, it was a journey she takes to rediscovery and Dessen did it right.

So the character of Sydney I loved. She was a daughter who was loved but she was almost pushed to the side. The parents only concentrated on their troubled son and didn’t see the daughter who needed them. They will get it together but it takes a lot for them to truly understand. I was happy the parents got their act together before something very bad happened to Sydney. I liked that Sydney started to live life for herself which was thanks to the Chatham family. This family I loved. They were dysfunctional but worked in the best ways. There were three characters of the family that stood out which was Mrs. Chatham, Mac, and Layla. The mom was courageous with all that she had to go through. Layla was kind and a vibrant young woman who made Sydney believe she could be more. Then there was Mac who was definitely the love interest. I liked that it was innocent and not a heartbreaking love, but a hopeful one.

Then there was the ending which was predictable, though I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Tough Love

Tough LoveVanity Baker wanted Stack and with each day of seeing him around she started to fall for him. She made a plan to offer him a one night stand in hopes that he will want them be together longer. Her plan will work but there will be trouble that Vanity will find herself in the middle of with Stack.

Stack “The Wolf” Hannigan was a man who enjoyed woman and only for a short period. Though with Vanity he started thinking a longer period of time, but before they could really get started his dysfunctional family comes into the picture, and trouble follows.

Tough Love is the third book from the Ultimate series by Lori Foster. I loved this book. I seem to be a broken record with this series, but then Lori Foster is one of my favorite authors.

Vanity’s character was a carefree woman, but that was how she made herself appear. She was timid with relationships and she was vulnerable. I was horrified with what happened to Vanity’s family, it was so sad. I was happy that she was getting together with Stack because she should have someone to love, and Stack was that guy. I think the way she went about it to get his attention wasn’t the most honest but it really didn’t hurt anyone. Stack’s character was a good guy. He took care of his family and he hated liars, this fact will come back to be a problem between Stack and Vanity which was predictable. Though the outcome in the end was worth the problems.

I really liked Stack’s dysfunctional family. At first I thought that they were bad but they were the complete opposite. The sister needed toughing up but she was a good person, and she does get better at the end. The mother just wanted to make sure her children were happy. The trouble that comes after Stack and Vanity is related to Stack’s family. Things will quickly escalate for Vanity and Stack.

I am done with the series, that is until February. That will be when Armie’s story will be out. I can’t wait to read his story. His character has been outrageous and mysterious. There was something that happened in his past and I think I have an idea, then there is Rissy who will be the woman that will have Armie falling for. Well he already is, he’s just too afraid to take that chance.
