Even though it is after the holidays I decided to read A Holiday By Gaslight by Mimi Matthews. This was a novella with a very Christmas theme and it was delightful.
Sophie Appersett was being courted by a suitor who was not a gentleman but he was as rich as one. Her parents supported the match but Sophie was having a hard time. She knew nothing of her suitor which did not sit well with her. Becoming bolder Sophie needed to know Ned more and at the Christmas party seemed the best idea.
Mr. Edward “Ned” Sharpe had been besotted by Sophie but he had no idea how to talk to a lady. He will follow a book which will make his seem distant. Ned believes that all is lost but then Sophie gives him a proposal.
I really enjoyed these characters. Sophie was often a little too shy at times and Ned was not forward enough but they got their act together. I liked that Sophie became a little more assertive and Ned took charge but he was not demanding. There was a part in the book that I thought all was ruined but thankfully they were able to talk.
The idea of gaslight was interesting to read and the father was definitely a visionary but he was too much of a dreamer and very selfish.
The one aspect I didn’t really love was Emily, who was Sophie’s sister. Emily was too spoiled for me. She wasn’t a villain but she wasn’t a great sister always. Deep down she was a good person, but I would almost prefer her to be the villain. It was annoying to have her in the book. I kept saying she was okay to she was annoying.
Clay Price has everything he could ever want but what kept him up at nights was the girl who betrayed him seven years ago. He made a plan to get Natalie Weston back and finally into his bed.
Natalie Weston has stopped living her life seven years ago when the love of her life walked away from her. Now he is back and Natalie will be shocked by what he is proposing.
Dirty Scoundrel is the second book to Jessica Clare’s series Roughneck Billionaires. I wondered about this story after I had read the summary. I did not want to read about Clay tricking Natalie into something that would end up hurting both of them. Luckily that was not the case, it started out like that but it turned into more when you got to know Clay’s character. I really enjoyed this story. Clay, like his brother Boone, is crude but there really is a sensitive side to him which comes out when he is around Natalie. She is the only girl he has ever loved. Natalie’s character is a woman who has been working herself to the bone and she keeps giving more. I liked that Natalie did not fall at Clay’s feet when he came back into her life with his ridicules contract.
The father was frustrating. He was a big deal back in Hollywood but now with his dementia he would forget many things and then go back into the past. It wasn’t like he was using his daughter but he did manipulate when he was having a good day. The father got what he wanted in the end which was good for Natalie as he was taken care of in the end.
Christopher Argent was an assassin to higher but he would never kill children. He never misses but Christopher will miss this time. He will not kill Millie but save her from the man who had hired him. Christopher will have to find out the true person behind the contract while he keeps Millie and her son safe.
Millicent LeCour “Millie” was an actress and one who was very talented. She will be known to all the gentleman as unattainable but there will be one, Christopher, who will make her want more. Millie will have to think about her son but will quickly realize that she will need Christopher in order to keep her son alive.
The Hunter is the second book to the series Victorian Rebels by Kerrigan Byrne. I really liked this book. Like the first one it was darker, not the romantic story where the couple have no big issues. Byrne writes about assassins, actresses, and murder.
As said the story is darker and that is mainly because of Christopher’s character. He was severally traumatized which made him into a fighter then killer. Christopher is not so damaged that he can’t be saved even if he thinks it is too late. I liked Christopher because he spoke the truth, it might have been cruel but that was his way. I also liked that he struggled. When he was going to hurt Millie he had to stop because he knew it was wrong. Millie’s character was predictable with her story line but I didn’t mind it that much because I wanted to read about her. Millie had a mask of emotion that she wore and unless she was with her son or even Christopher it was always guarded. I liked that Christopher made her feel safe even though he was the assassin coming to end her life.
The bad guys were plenty and the ultimate one that was behind it all was a surprise but it made sense. The next story is with Mena, who is mentioned in this book, and that book came out this August which I will be reading next.
Olivia lived her business and she was taking the next step with opening up a new shop. All that stood in her way was Tony, the owner of the hotel. She will thrilled when he grants her new shop but will be taken back when he proposes a completely different contract.
Scandalized! is a novel by Lori Foster. It is a standalone novel and another fun novel to read. As I was reading the book I knew that it could go several ways and with each scenario there was going to be heartbreak but you knew in the end there would be happiness. Well I was right in one of the situations that I had guessed and even though I predicted the story I enjoyed the book.
I think what got me was that Tony was a surprise. He was a complete family man and he loved his nieces and nephews. Though he was a little confusing with his need not to marry the woman. Although he will be thinking differently as he spends time with Olivia. Olivia’s character surprised me as well. Her background story was so sad and it really shaped her to the person she had become. I wanted Olivia to be happy but she will do something that will only create a problem between her and Tony. I liked how Foster handled the secret and the outcome of the situation between Tony and Olivia.
Lynette wanted to take charge of her life and went to a woman who would help get her a husband. Lynette will not be prepared for what she will be walking into when she meets this woman and her nephew, Viscount Marlock. She will be stepping into a darker world which she will have to embrace if she wanted to succeed.
Viscount Marlock, Adrian, has been taking a young woman, teach her and sell her to an aging suitor. That was how he was making a living to raise funds for his crumbling estate. Adrian will quickly realize that Lynette was not like the other woman. He will be tempted but to give into the temptation he will lose all that he had worked for.
Devil’s Bargain is the third book to the series Regency Rages to Riches by Jade Lee. I was shocked by this book. I really did love it but from how the other two were written this one was darker with character cruelty on Adrian’s and his aunts side. But it was compelling to read and I needed there to be a happy ending for all the cruelty that had occurred.
So the story is basically about Lynette being led to a new life where she will be sold to the highest bidder, who will be an old man. Adrian will guide her in this training along with his aunt. So I really liked Lynette. She was a woman who had passion but didn’t understand that. She was also very emotional throughout the book, she was strong at one point and weak the next. There were points in the book that I was getting teary eyed for Lynette with what she had to endure. Adrian’s character was one that I really disliked right away but then knew that there had to be a redeeming trait in him. There was but he kept going back and forth between a man you wanted to cheer for to a man you wanted to hate. I was happy that Lee put in more about his past so that you understood him.
The ending was perfect and Lee did it with a good twist that changed everything.
Alexa Maria McKenzie decided to try her luck and cast a love spell to find the perfect man especially one that has cash to spend. Alexa needed money to save her parents home and will be shocked when the perfect person for the job was her best friends brother.
Nicholas Ryan was a billionaire and was about to get what he wanted but there was a problem. He had to marry to get the company he needed. With the help of his sister he will find a wife, her best friend.
The Marriage Bargain is the first book to the series Marriage to a Billionaire by Jennifer Probst. I really liked the first book. This was a shorter novel then the other two I have read from the series but it was still a very entertaining novel to read. There were characters opposites of each other, fights, jealousy, hot sex and finally love even though it almost comes at the end and almost always too late.
Alexa was a kind and generous woman. She was determined to do things her way and on her own. I liked her love of animals and her drive to help out animals that need that extra help. Then there was Nicholas who did not want any attachments. He wanted to work but the “will” from his uncle stopped those plans. He was a good man but he was cold at times which was from his upbringing. Nicholas will start to change thanks to his wife, that is eventually. I thought that Jennifer Probst wrote a perfect ending to the book that will make you smile and know that this couple will have a chance.
I liked the list of requirements for Alexa and Nicholas and their potential spouses which were the exact opposites and yet it will work. That is when they were not fighting which was almost comical at times. Their fiery natures worked well for their attention to each other. When they had the chance the passion which surrounded them flared to life especially when they were arguing.
I am reading the second book to the series next which will complete the series for me as I have already read the third and fourth book.
Shawn Hamby needs a husband thanks to her grandfathers ruling. She had to get a husband so she could own and run the track which had been her grandfathers. She had little to chose from but will find herself gravitating towards Rhett Ford.
Rhett Ford was not looking for another woman to be with but will be intrigued by Shawn when he sees her at a fetish club. He will be even more intrigued with her proposal and will except. He found himself wanting this woman and made it his mission to show Shawn what she had been missing.
Full Throttle is the seventh book to Erin McCarthy’s series Fast Track. I have read all of these books and have found them fun and steamy. The seventh book certainly plays true to that fact and gets steamier. Everything about the book is steamy especially with Rhett and Shawn together.
Rhett is all about control in the bedroom but not without his partners consent. Rhett is not exactly a player but he knows how to play the game. I like that he found his match in Shawn. She was a strong woman and did not break the first moment that Rhett touched her. She fought to stay in control but soon found that it wasn’t a bad idea to given in to her hot husband.
There are of course problems that occur with the couple that will come up but when Shawn finds out news at the very end of the book there’s definitely a problem. It looked like the couple would not be walking in the sunset but McCarthy will make sure that is not the case.
I will admit that the ending was a little sappy but you gotta love that these characters are having their happy ending.
