Even though it is after the holidays I decided to read A Holiday By Gaslight by Mimi Matthews. This was a novella with a very Christmas theme and it was delightful.
Sophie Appersett was being courted by a suitor who was not a gentleman but he was as rich as one. Her parents supported the match but Sophie was having a hard time. She knew nothing of her suitor which did not sit well with her. Becoming bolder Sophie needed to know Ned more and at the Christmas party seemed the best idea.
Mr. Edward “Ned” Sharpe had been besotted by Sophie but he had no idea how to talk to a lady. He will follow a book which will make his seem distant. Ned believes that all is lost but then Sophie gives him a proposal.
I really enjoyed these characters. Sophie was often a little too shy at times and Ned was not forward enough but they got their act together. I liked that Sophie became a little more assertive and Ned took charge but he was not demanding. There was a part in the book that I thought all was ruined but thankfully they were able to talk.
The idea of gaslight was interesting to read and the father was definitely a visionary but he was too much of a dreamer and very selfish.
The one aspect I didn’t really love was Emily, who was Sophie’s sister. Emily was too spoiled for me. She wasn’t a villain but she wasn’t a great sister always. Deep down she was a good person, but I would almost prefer her to be the villain. It was annoying to have her in the book. I kept saying she was okay to she was annoying.
Ian and Riley are back in this quick short story! A Very Dare Christmas is a novella, number 6.5, in the series Dare to Love by Carly Phillips.
Its Christmas time and Riley is feeling overwhelmed with everything she has to do and her husband sees her exhaustion. Ian will do what any good husband would do, he will whisk his wife away for a romantic getaway to reconnect.
I really loved reading this story because it gave an insight into Ian and Riley’s lives which seemed realistic. The romance was leaving because all their attention was on their children. Getting back the romance was easy for them and very steamy. Though after reading this short story I found myself annoyed because it was like a teaser to the series. I want Carly Phillips to finish the series. I believe there are only three more siblings to write about and I just want them to be written so I know what is going on. I also hope that there is some actual justice when it comes to their cheating father.
I am looking forward to reading more from the series. Please Carly Phillips finish these novels!
Eva Jordan is a romantic who will always look on the bright side of things. She had lost her grandmother but she had the support of her friends to get through the loss. She will be given a job to help design Lucas Blade, the writer, apartment but she will be surprised that he was at home. Lucas Blade was supposed to be writing in Vermont but will be staying at his apartment trying to write through his writers block.
Miracle on 5th Avenue is the third book to the series From Manhattan with Love by Sarah Morgan. Alright I liked the book, it was cute and sweet and all about moving on but I guess I just wasn’t as invested in this book.
Now I liked Eva’s character but she was a little much at times with her positive behavior. I didn’t want her character to not be positive but it was a lot at times. Other than her enthusiasm I liked that she was kind and did what she could to help others. Lucas’s character was still brooding about his wife who had passed away several years ago. He also had writers block because of his mood. It was interesting that Eva helped solve the writers block. What happens to his story is predictable and a little comical but it helps bring them closer. I will say that even though I wasn’t that invested in the book I thought the ending was sweet and brought a smile to my face as I finished the book.
Luna was excited to go to the island but will be surprised when Endurance Island is in Alaska in winter time. From the beginning Luna is annoyed because of the weather and that no one was listening to her. She will be quickly booted out thanks to the leader Owen. She will get to the lodge and will be surprised when the next contestant walks through the door, Owen.
Reindeer Games is a novella within the series Games by Jessica Clare. This was a fun and quick novella to read but for me it was really short. I wish it was a little longer.
At first Owen’s character was driving me crazy. Right from the get go he was very demanding and not even giving Luna a chance. Although to be fair Luna was very headstrong but it is a competition and you have to be tough. I did end up liking Owen once you got to know him. He was a pastry chef who actually liked Luna, it was just his competitive nature that took over while in the game. Well he was still competitive but it was now all for fun. Luna’s character was competitive as well but she was also quirky and I loved that she was a horror script writer. Once they were away from the game and in the lodge they relaxed a little and actually found a way to get along.
The holidays are upon the Prescott family and Gabriel is looking to spending that time with his family on Christmas day. Gabriel will quickly find that he wouldn’t be alone in the house on Christmas Eve. He will find a young girl hiding out in the attic and immediately begin to figure out where she is from, but he can only do that with the help of his family.
Gabriel’s Gift is a novella to the series Lost Hearts by Christina Dodd. This novella gives a little insight with how this extended family has grown over the years. The main character to the novella is obviously Gabriel. Gabriel’s character was a man who was still hurting due to his past but he was a good man. He loved his family with all his heart and his wife. When he interacted with the runaway girl he will have to talk about his past to help this girl heal, along with himself.
I have been a fan of this series, Lost Hearts, and Fortune Hunters which is linked through Gabriel’s character. This novella was very sweet and fun to read. It was actually very mushy with all the emotion but I thought that was just fine because this is a Christmas novella. It was supposed to be filled with love and hope and I think it delivers. The only criticism would be that it could be longer so you get more of this family.
Eve Harmon was dreading another birthday where she would once again be alone. Though this year she would take a chance on the wild side and have a one night stand with a very complicated man that will change her life.
The Heart of Christmas is the seventh book in the series Whiskey Creek by Brenda Novak. First off I did like this book. Now it has been a while since I picked up a book from Whiskey Creek which was only because I was very angry with the story line that happened with Chey. Now I think I was able to enjoy this book because its wasn’t focused on Chey, though she was there in the book. I do hope that the secret will come out with Chey and that she is the one to tell Dylan so Dylan doesn’t feel all the way betrayed.
Alright enough with my frustration with Chey, back to Eve and Rex. I liked Eve who was a good person and always did the right thing. Eve was not necessarily a perfect person but she made herself out to be like that. I wanted her to get angry especially with Ted who was trying to be nice but to me he was getting annoying. She does stand up and address her feelings which I was happy for. Now the character of Rex was certainly a different type of character from those in Whiskey Creek. Rex was on the run from his past who were some pretty dangerous men. At first I will say that Rex was not a character I really liked. I thought he was too closed off and too cold to Eve. Then you get to know the man and realize there is more to his character than you think. Rex is a pretty complicated character that had a lot to deal with in his life. For Rex it takes him a really long time in the book to finally get that he should have a chance at happiness with someone like Eve.
There is the threat of danger in the book which comes from Rex’s past and I thought it was interesting with how it was handled and especially who had helped.
I decided since this book for me was a success I am going to follow it up with the eighth book in the series which I will be reading next.
Lady Amelia Pembroke was on a quest to find a husband so she would not be a burden to her brother. In order to do that she had to make sure the annual Sheffield Christmas party happened without an problem.
Lord Benedict Sheffield was stuck doing his family’s party but will find himself being pushed to the side as Lady Amelia will take over the planning. He will be fascinated by this woman every moment he spends with her.
The Viscounts Christmas Temptation is the first book in the series The Dukes of War by Erica Ridley.
So this was a free book from amazon that I decided to try. Personally it was okay. Nothing too special for me. I guess why I didn’t really love it was because of Amelia who was just too perfect. Don’t get me wrong I like to be organized but she took it much farther. Her character just didn’t draw me in right away. It did get better as I read on but it was still just okay.
