Duke of Pleasure

duke-of-pleasureHugh Fitzroy, the Duke of Kyle was on a mission to stop the Lords of Chaos. He will find help from a boy from St. Giles, Alf. Though Hugh will realize quickly that Alf is more than he appears, specifically that Alf is a girl.

Alf has disguised herself as a boy for as long as she could remember. It was easier to get around St. Giles as a boy. But Alf had another secret, she was also the Ghost of St. Giles. Alf will find herself helping Hugh and that interaction will lead her to have feelings for him.

Duke of Pleasure is the eleventh book to the series Maiden Lane by Elizabeth Hoyt. I really loved this book. It has been interesting learning about these vile Lords of Chaos and I loved that the Ghost of St. Giles was a woman.

Hugh’s character to me seemed a little too stuck up in the other books but as I got to know his character I found he was a brave man and committed to his task. Also, that he loved his sons, he just might not be able to show it. Actually Hugh has a problem expressing his feelings no matter what which is evident with how he acts with Alf. Though when push comes to shove Hugh will get it right. Alf’s character was intriguing. She was the one who got the information and she fought to protect those around her. I liked that even when she had to dress up as a lady the real woman was still there and not lost in all the glitz of the ball.

I liked the mystery of the Lords of Chaos. They are the evil guys and they need to be stopped. It looks like they will be here to stay as they will be in the next story. I am wondering who will be the person to stop the group.

I can’t wait to read Duke of Desire which will come out in October of 2017.

Wrong Place, Right Time

Wrong Place Right TimeJenny was stressed beyond belief and it was only getting worse, but then she will get a break with a new job. Jenny was hesitant but she was taking a chance and one with a new man in her life. Dev will have Jenny wanting more and will have her believing that she can handle whatever is thrown into her life.

Wrong Place, Right Time is the second book to the series Bourbon Street Boys by Elle Casey. I liked the novel but I have to say not as much as the first story. This novel was definitely much slower to get through. In fact I just wanted to skim some parts of the novel, but I stuck with it and I was happy towards the end.

I guess what threw me was the characters. In the first novel Dev’s character was fun and a little wacky with his sneak attacks but in this one he was much more moody. Now I understand as with his situation with his child is a little sad, but he was a really good dad, just more private with that side of his life. I just wish there was more of Dev from the first book. He does show that side of him but it takes some time. I was also a little annoyed by how he played hot and cold with Jenny. It was like a yo yo with how he was acting with her. Things will get settled but it takes over half the novel to get there. Now with Jenny’s character she was the frantic mom who was over stressed and over worked. I think her character worked but she was a little on the crazy side at times. I do love her interaction with her youngest Sammy. That kid with his lisp is too precious and Sammy’s interaction with Dev’s kid is adorable.

There were some definite good things and some annoying things but overall this was an enjoyable book. I am reading the third book next.

A Right Honorable Gentleman

a-right-honorable-gentlemanMiss Catherine Hooks is a well known governess but it is time for her to move on from her post. She will make sure to do it quickly as it looks like her employer wants more.

Edward Glennon did not want his governess to leave. He was finding that his life would not be complete without her in it, now he just has to convince her.

A Right Honorable Gentleman is a novella by Courtney Milan. I liked this novella but I wanted more from this story. This novella was short and I mean short. I read this story in about twenty minutes. I have nothing against short stories and I know that Courtney Milan can write a great story but this needed more.

I think that if this was a longer novella to novel everything would come together nicely as it did in this story but there would be more depth to the story. You would then feel more for these characters and really cheer for Catherine and Edward to find that love and passion they had kept from each other.

I decided to try another Courtney Milan novella, What Happened at Midnight, which I am reading next.

The Highlander

the-highlanderLieutenant Colonel Liam MacKenzie was known as the Demon Highlander. He was known as a hard man but also a hero and a man to be respected. Liam wanted what was right for his children which was why he was searching for a governess. Though when Philomena comes he will be wanting to send her back as he felt an instant spark of desire. Liam knew to tread carefully with the governess especially as she was holding secrets.

Miss Philomena was on the run from her abusive husband and his sadistic ways. She will be rescued and given a new identity by her friends but she is unsure of where they sent her. The Laird looked dangerous but she will soon learn that he would never harm her or those he cared for.

The Highlander is the third novel to the series Victorian Rebels by Kerrigan Byrne. I really liked this one. There was a similar theme with the plot being darker and I was pulled in right away. The first two scenes that are written by the author are horrible and they tell how these characters have been treated. Both the characters had been misused and mistreated. Mena’s character has recently felt the mistreatment for the last five years while Liam had grown up with it. Mena was almost broken but she had been saved. I was happy that she was not broken and that she could stand up against the Laird even though he scared her at times. You got the sense that Mena was truly a strong willed woman, much stronger than anyone knew. Liam’s character you would think would have been cruel and he was to those on the battlefield but to those closest he was kind. Well he was as kind as he could be. It seemed that emotion was almost foreign to Liam, though with his childhood that could be understood. I really loved how Liam was with Mena. He was certainly in lust but he cared for her and wanted more from her than just a night together. He just had to get better addressing his feelings.

The bad guy was several people but the one that you wanted dead was certainly Mena’s husband who put her into the asylum.

The fourth book is coming out in February of 2017.

The Hunter

The HunterChristopher Argent was an assassin to higher but he would never kill children. He never misses but Christopher will miss this time. He will not kill Millie but save her from the man who had hired him. Christopher will have to find out the true person behind the contract while he keeps Millie and her son safe.

Millicent LeCour “Millie” was an actress and one who was very talented. She will be known to all the gentleman as unattainable but there will be one, Christopher, who will make her want more. Millie will have to think about her son but will quickly realize that she will need Christopher in order to keep her son alive.

The Hunter is the second book to the series Victorian Rebels by Kerrigan Byrne. I really liked this book. Like the first one it was darker, not the romantic story where the couple have no big issues. Byrne writes about assassins, actresses, and murder.

As said the story is darker and that is mainly because of Christopher’s character. He was severally traumatized which made him into a fighter then killer. Christopher is not so damaged that he can’t be saved even if he thinks it is too late. I liked Christopher because he spoke the truth, it might have been cruel but that was his way. I also liked that he struggled. When he was going to hurt Millie he had to stop because he knew it was wrong. Millie’s character was predictable with her story line but I didn’t mind it that much because I wanted to read about her. Millie had a mask of emotion that she wore and unless she was with her son or even Christopher it was always guarded. I liked that Christopher made her feel safe even though he was the assassin coming to end her life.

The bad guys were plenty and the ultimate one that was behind it all was a surprise but it made sense. The next story is with Mena, who is mentioned in this book, and that book came out this August which I will be reading next.

Rules for a Proper Governess

Rules for a Proper GovernessSinclair McBride was a skilled barrister and took his job seriously. He had little time for anything but his job, even his children. His children were known to run wild and go through governess’s. Sinclair will find a solution has fallen into his lap when Bertie agreed to be the governess.

Roberta Bertie Frasier was from the gutters of England and was a thief. She will quickly find herself going from thief to governess as she will be hired by Sinclair McBride, a man she had tried to steal from. Though Bertie will find that she wouldn’t just be a governess but also the woman for Sinclair.

Rules for a Proper Governess is the seventh book to the series Mackenzies/Highland Pleasures. I really loved this book. I was swept right into the story.

Bertie’s character was lovable. She had a goodness about her even though she was a thief. She wanted to be better, always tried to help and cared greatly. Sinclair was a man that was drifting through life but he will get an awakening when Bertie comes into his life. I liked that he started to loosen up and had become the man he used to be.

The lust between the two of them was steamy and very passionate, and there was a lot of sex. I don’t think those scenes overwhelmed the book but they were very present. It made sense with Sinclair as he had been a man that had run wild. He let himself live again with Bertie.

I loved the children, Andrew and Cat. They were adorable and starved for attention for their father. They will get along with Bertie because she takes the time to get to know them. If Jennifer Ashley keeps writing the series I hope she will will write some stories on the children of these McBrides and Mackenzies.

I have only one more to read which is The Mackenzie Clan Gathering.

Mackenzie Family Christmas

Mackenzie Family ChristmasI decided to go back to the Mackenzies/Highland Pleasures series by Jennifer Ashley. I have read a decent amount of the series but had skipped over some of the novellas as they were never available. I am starting off with Mackenzie Family Christmas which is 4.5 novella of the series.

So the story plot is very simple, the family is getting together for Christmas time and whenever this family gets together its never simple.

What I liked about the book was that Jennifer Ashley included the whole family along with some new members, the McBrides. They will be getting their own stories in the series. I only read about Elliot McBride and really liked it. I have no doubt that I will like these other brothers.

I thought that the book was charming and it gave you more insight with what was going on in the characters life. I will say that I really love all the brothers, but Ian has always been my favorite. I loved his interaction with his wife, Beth, and his children. The surprise that Ian does for his family is magical.

I am going to be reading The Untamed Mackenzie next.
