Cake on a Hot Tin Roof

Rita Lucero did not want to host the Mardi Gras party but was forced into the role. She will work hard to make the party a success but when one of the guest winds up dead a whole lot of trouble starts for Rita’s family.

Cake on a Hot Tin Roof is the second book to the series A Piece of Cake Mystery by Jacklyn Brady. I am really enjoying this series. It actually surprised me because of my lack of interest with mystery’s. Although to be fair this is definitely not a very serious mystery, this is what is considered a cozy mystery. It was fast paced and it kept me interested.

Rita’s character is out of her element with the amount of work to do. Although she is ready for that hard work. Personally she needs to take a break and chill out for a moment but that would be unlikely to happen. With the investigation Rita stays close to it as her family could be in trouble. I liked her tenacious attitude with the investigation but she was too head strong and acted first then thought.

The investigation was interesting as she did her own interviewing of the bystanders. I was wondering who had done it without too much success with guessing the right person. The main police officer was Liam Sullivan who had been introduced in the first book. Now as a romance reader I am always looking to see who will become attached. Liam definitely has a shot and then there is Gabriel the bartender. Only time will tell if Rita’s character will become more than interested in one of them. I just don’t want the whole love triangle thing happening. It gets annoying and I lose interested.

With each story I am also learning more about the staff and I have to say I am not too impressed by them. They are clearly resentful of Rita for invading their territory. Though I have noticed that some of the ice has thawed and they are warming up to her.

I decided to continue with this series and will be reading Arsenic and Old Cake next.

Partner Games

Clementine and Georgie were twins who were in the World Race games. Clementine was the nerdy twin and Georgie was the model. The two could not be more unalike but they would do anything for each other. Together they will have to go through the challenges and figure out who to trust within the game.

Partner Games is the last book in the series Games by Jessica Clare. I enjoyed this book.

I thought Clementine’s character was great. She was very nerdy and unsure of herself but she had guts and would do what was needed, especially for her sister. I didn’t like that Clementine was overlooked a lot, at least until Swift comes into the picture. Swift was another player in the game and he was all about Clementine. He had to keep his mind on the game but it had been hard as he was lusting after her. I liked that a romance between them started. It was lustful but sweet at the same time. They were a pair that you wanted to cheer for.

There will be a touchy subject, rape, that had happened to Georgie in the not too distant past, which I had a feeling about. She had showed all the traits of a person who had been abused. You felt for her and hoped that she would be whole again. I was thankful that Jessica Clare wrote in the character Plate who was a great match for Georgie, someone who will let her be the woman she wanted.

I thought this was a solid series from Jessica Clare and have enjoyed these characters.

Pleasure Games

Juno Ashmore is a glassblower who is in desperate need of money. Her friend will convince her to enter in a contest to win the heart of a billionaire. With her being on the show she will automatically get fifty thousand dollars. Juno will be excited for the show but will want to back out when she meets the bachelor.

Heathcliff Forester had arranged an opportunity to get the woman he had loved back in his life. He will do all that he can to get Juno to understand he had never stopped loving her.

Pleasure Games is a novella within the series Games by Jessica Clare. I liked this novella but I was wondering if I wouldn’t. This was a version of the Bachelor if you could not guess. So, Heathcliff was doing all he could to get Juno back and he rigged the dating show to make sure that she would come to him. I didn’t like the lying but Heathcliff was doing it because he truly loved her, so I pretty much forgave him for the lying to Juno. Heathcliff was very suave but I liked to see a vulnerability when he was scared of losing Juno. Now Juno’s character was a girl who didn’t like handouts and had a problem with running away when she got scared. I wanted to laugh at Juno’s emotions at times because it felt real. She was fighting her attraction and claimed that she didn’t want Heathcliff but every time he talked to another woman she got jealous.

I was happy with the ending as Jessica Clare wraps up everything in a predictable way but nevertheless I wanted that ending.

I am reading Partner Games next which will complete the Games series.

Reindeer Games

Luna was excited to go to the island but will be surprised when Endurance Island is in Alaska in winter time. From the beginning Luna is annoyed because of the weather and that no one was listening to her. She will be quickly booted out thanks to the leader Owen. She will get to the lodge and will be surprised when the next contestant walks through the door, Owen.

Reindeer Games is a novella within the series Games by Jessica Clare. This was a fun and quick novella to read but for me it was really short. I wish it was a little longer.

At first Owen’s character was driving me crazy. Right from the get go he was very demanding and not even giving Luna a chance. Although to be fair Luna was very headstrong but it is a competition and you have to be tough. I did end up liking Owen once you got to know him. He was a pastry chef who actually liked Luna, it was just his competitive nature that took over while in the game. Well he was still competitive but it was now all for fun. Luna’s character was competitive as well but she was also quirky and I loved that she was a horror script writer. Once they were away from the game and in the lodge they relaxed a little and actually found a way to get along.

I am reading Pleasure Games next.

Body Games

Annabelle Tucker never wanted to go back to Endurance Island as they made her look like a bimbo who slept with a contestant. She had flirted and thought herself in love but she had found out it was all a game. Annabelle gets a chance to then change her image and get revenge on the contestant who ruined her reputation.

Jendan Abercrombie had been on House Guest and now was on Endurance Island. He was the nice guy on the show and he will do his best to help Annabelle who he was quickly falling for, even though she just wanted them to be friends.

Body Games is the fifth book to the series Games by Jessica Clare. I really liked this book. Jessica Clare takes us back to Endurance Island aka Survivor.

Annabelle’s character was a woman out for revenge and that revenge was to get out her old/present partner so he didn’t win the money. I was cheering for Annabelle even with every dirty move she made. Some made me laugh and cringe but she was playing the game. I liked that she stayed true to no romances on the show even though it had been difficult with Jendan on the show. Jendan’s character was from the fourth book and I had liked him. I was routing for him to find that romance in real life and Annabelle seemed like a good match for him.

I am reading Reindeer Games next.

Bedroom Games

Kandis Thornton was on the show for one reason, the money. She wanted to help her mother and the money would do that. Kandis had a plan going into the show but it will be blown away when she gets a partner, Brodie Short. Though as they work together Kandis wonders if something real could come from a fake show.

Brodie Short was wanting to be famous, that was why he was on these reality tv shows. His first show had him as a villain and he wanted to change that. He had become a flirt instead but his partner will have him wanting more.

Bedroom Games is the fourth book from the series Games by Jessica Clare. I really liked this novel. I am a big fan of Big Brother reality tv show and this was based off that popular tv show. Reading this novel definitely brought me back to the show especially with all the deals that are made between the contestants.

Kandis’s character was someone I appreciated because she was playing the game but even through all of it you could still tell the real girl beneath it all. I liked that she found lust with Brodie but she still kept her guard up around him. Brodie’s character was considered the villain from the previous book and I fully expected to dislike him but I didn’t. Within this game it is expected to sneaky and he did a good job, but you got to read his thoughts in the interviews and knew that he was starting to feel something that was real. Though all through the whole book I wondered if those feelings would truly last. I got the answer at the end of the book.

I am reading Body Games next.

Ice Games

Zara Pritchard had been an Olympic but her reputation was in ruins when she walked away during her routine when she was fourteen. Now Zara has a second chance at figure skating with a reality tv show. She is hesitant and even more so when she meets her partner.

Ty Randall did not think that a ice skating show was going to repair his reputation with the MMA but he was forced to go with it. He will fight with his partner every step but then something will change between them.

Ice Games is the third book to the series Games by Jessica Clare. I really enjoyed this novel. It was a fun story based on Dancing with the Stars.

I liked Zara’s character because she had learned from her mistake. She had been young and thrust into the limelight. She was doing her best to still make something of herself. The reality tv show was funny with how it was rigged, which you have to wonder how many of those shows are rigged. Ty’s character was at first someone I thought I would hate. He was going to be too cocky but all he really wanted was a second chance at his career. He got it together with the help of Zara. The romance reader in me loved the ending because it wrapped up everything in a nice bow, and I was happy with that.

I am moving forward with the series and will be reading the fourth book next.
