Ursula Kern owns Kern Secretarial Agency with a couple of employees. When one of her employee ends up dead and Ursula knows it wasn’t suicide. She will go in search of answers from Anne’s last employment, she will find help from Slater Roxton her last employer. She will quickly learn that darker things were happening in the house.
Slater Roxton had been trapped on an island for one year which changed his life. Getting back to his normal routine was not going to happen so Slater changed his ways. Instead of fitting in with society he became an oddity. When Ursula comes into his life he knows that he doesn’t want to part from her, which leads him on a quest to help find her employees murderer.
Garden of Lies is a novel by Amanda Quick. I really loved this book. Amanda Quick aka Jayne Ann Krentz has been a favorite of mine for many years. The plot immediately intrigued me and I was pulled right into the story.
Ursula’s character was a woman who had a career and worked hard at it. I liked Ursula’s conviction to do the right thing. She was a strong woman who wanted to do the right thing but she was also someone who acted first, thought second. With Ursula’s character she is hiding something which of course will come out though more towards the middle. Slater’s character was an oddity but that was what I liked about him. He was quiet and thoughtful but could be ruthless if needed to be.
The villain was clear in my mind but then things got twisted. That usually happens in an Amanda Quick novel. I thought she wrote the twist well.
When I heard that Harry Potter was being continued I was hesitant to buy the book. I had loved Harry Potter and I really didn’t want more because I was satisfied with what I had. But as an avid reader of Harry Potter I had to read the book, the curiosity was driving me crazy. So I was given Harry Potter and the Cursed Child and let me say that I actually liked it. There were some issues I had with it but overall I thought it was really good. What threw me was the format. When I had gotten the book it didn’t occur to me it would be in play form, I guess I was just not thinking. Well once I got over that bit of news I went straight to reading the story.
The story starts right off where the seventh book ends which is nineteen years later. Harry and his friends are at the train station and they are dropping off their children to go to Hogwarts. Albus (Harry and Ginny’s child) will be the main character along with Scorpious (Draco’s child) and it will be telling their story once they are at Hogwarts. I wouldn’t go into great detail so not to spoil it. All I will say is those boys will be changing a lot of things and there will be consequences.
Now there are some out there that didn’t like the book and that’s fine as we all have our own opinions and likes and dislikes. This book is not like the other books because it is not a book but a play. It is written in dialogue and scene direction so there are no places for the characters thoughts, but honestly it didn’t bother me. I thought that the characters stayed true to who they were in the books. I also liked that you got to know more about what was happening in the characters life, where they ended up in life. And of course there were some good twist that were very entertaining to read.
Victoria Slade is trying to find Mr. Right but so far things haven’t been going right especially when she has a break-in. Victoria will have to move which is where she will meet Ford. She will instantly think him a player but as they work together she will find that was not the case.
Ford Dixon is trying to help his sister find out the guy she had slept with and he will get help from a neighbor. He will want the neighbor immediately but will find her difficult. Ford will do what he can to win over Victoria and help his sister.
Suddenly One Summer is a novel by Julie James. This is not part of a series but it does have characters from the series FBI/US Attorney. I thought this was a good book to read.
I haven’t read anything from James for a while but I will say that she is a good storyteller. I kind of wish she embellished on the scene with the break-in that happened in the beginning. I liked where that was going, though how she created Victoria to have a panic disorder after that felt very real which I liked. Someone who goes through a break-in would not go unaffected. I liked Victoria’s character, she was a little hard but being a divorce lawyer probably made her more jaded. Though I did like that she was able to help out Ford’s sister. Ford’s character was the laid back kind of guy and kind of a player but not a serious one. I wanted Ford to break down the barriers and really get to know Victoria which he will, it just takes a while.
I thought the part with the sister was sweet and I was glad that everything worked out for the best.
Grey Kingston had wanted fame and fortune and he got that but now he wanted more. He wanted the girl he had left behind. Grey knew that he had to prove to Avery that they could make it which was hard when his manager and a stalker were making trouble for them.
Avery Dare had loved Grey since high school but knew that she never wanted his lifestyle. With Grey back she has hope but she will be hesitant to trust him. Though Avery will have more to deal with especially when reporters are bringing up her father’s past.
Dare to Rock is the fifth book to Dare to Love series by Carly Phillips. I really loved this book.
Avery’s character was fantastic. She is a bubbly and confident woman when she does her job but on the inside she is still scared and a girl who has panic attacks. I thought how her attacks started was so sad and I hated that it was coming back because of the reporters. Though Avery is strong and she will get through the trouble. Grey’s character was not the cliche rocker which I liked. He cared about his work and wanted what was best for his band mates. I liked that Grey had to work hard to win back Avery.
The problem that occurs are the threats that Avery receives because of some crazy fan of Grey’s. The woman is psychotic and it shows in her behavior. I thought that James gives a good twist on how this woman was so successful with her threats.
Spoiler Alert: I have made mention that I really disliked the father and the way he doesn’t inquire about Avery especially when she is threatened really pissed me off. He tells her that he is annoyed that because of her antics his past is coming back out. Though Avery will finally get through to her father. She gives him a speech that I was hoping one of the kids would give, that let him know how hurtful he has been to them. From how the father was acting towards the end I think there is a chance he will be there for all of his kids.
I am taking a very quick break for the next book but will be back. I will also be reading about the New York Dare’s in the series NY Dare to Love.
Scott was bored with his job and wanted something more. He will find that with his brother’s security firm. He will use these connections to help protect Meg. He will do anything to protect her as he was falling for her.
Meg was single and going to be a mother. She was not looking for any guy to spend time with but when it came to Scott she could not say no. She will let him help especially when her ex starts to show he is serious about threatening her and her unborn baby.
Dare to Hold is the fourth book to the series Dare to Love by Carly Phillips. I really liked this book.
Meg’s character I wasn’t sure I would like when I had read the third book but she had not been a bad person, just someone who was needy. In this book she is stronger, well she has to be since she is going to be a mother. I liked that Meg was trying hard but she is human and help is sometimes needed. I liked that she didn’t go to Dylan, instead Scott was helping. Scott’s character is a cop well soon to be ex-cop to work in his brothers security firm. Scott is a man that likes to push his control and is dominant, very much like his older brother Ian. Though he would never hurt a woman. I think he just liked having things go his way. Though it was good he was like that because that would help Meg with her ex.
The problem in this book was Meg’s ex who had been abusive. You really end up hating Mike but everything he does, he does to himself.
Olivia loves her job though it can be difficult with handling the players. Her life will get more complicated when Dylan will show his interest as he starts to pursue her. Olivia will have to take a chance with Dylan but before she can be happy she has to get over her past.
Dylan wanted Olivia and knew that he had to take a chance. He will pursue her relentlessly and will finally get her to be with him. She will want a a fling but he will want more and will not stop till he gets Olivia to realize that she wants that too.
Dare to Touch is the third book to the series Dare to Love by Carly Phillips. I really liked this book.
Olivia’s character felt real. She looked to be a confident woman on the outside but she was a mess on the inside. She was insecure, had trust issues, and had a sad tragedy. I wanted her to find that love which would make her feel loved. It was clear that it was Dylan but before she could be happy she had to get over her past. Dylan’s character I liked. He was pushy but he was pushy to get Olivia. He wanted her more for just one night.
There will be a problem with Dylan’s friend Meg. They are just friends but Olivia will feel those old insecurities. I liked that Meg will not be a problem in fact she will be a main character in the next book.
So I am really disappointed in Olivia’s father. You already know that is not the best father but it feels like he doesn’t even try with his kids, in particular the ones he had with Emma. Maybe he will try harder but it feels too late.
Alex loved the game of football and was devastated when his career as a quarterback in the NFL was over. Alex will wonder what his next move was going to be and he will be surprised when his older half brother Ian helps him out. He will be even more surprised that he would be working with Madison who was the only woman he had wanted back in his life.
Madison loved her work but was going in a new direction and was excited to be making a difference. She will be less than thrilled that Alex has joined her team. She had been hurt when he broke things off and she was determined not to give him another shot. Though Madison will find herself giving in as Alex will show that he is not the same man that had broken her heart.
Dare to Desire is the second book to the series Dare to Love by Carly Phillips. I liked this book, I thought this was a good followup from the first book.
So Alex’s character before the accident was a good guy but he was used to the good life that went along with the career. Then when he does have his accident Alex changes into a better man. I liked the change in Alex because it gave him a chance for happiness. With Madison’s character I wanted her to be able to find someone to love and to get past that hurt she had since she was a young girl. It was so sad with what happened when she was a kid. Though Madison will find a foster home where the foster parents will love her like their own, but that will be jeopardized when her foster brother makes trouble although that happens in the present day.
Alex and Madison will have problems in their relationship. It is mostly Madison who does not feel comfortable with the fame that Alex had when in the spotlight. You will want to hit Alex’s agent who will do something underhandedly which creates a potential problem between the two characters.
Ian Dare is the big brother of his siblings and the owner of an NFL team. He was a player but when he sees Riley something will change. Instead of wanting all woman he will only want Riley but he doesn’t know if he can open his heart to her.
Riley Taylor loved her job but will find herself jobless that is until Ian hires her. She knows it could cause tension but she will soon find that she loves the job and loves being close to Ian. Though when her past comes back to haunt her there will be problems between her and Ian.
Dare to Love is the first book to the series Dare to Love by Carly Phillips. I really liked this story. I was swept into the story especially when you find out that Ian and his siblings have half siblings. Their father had a completely different family at the same time. I was drawn into this strange family dynamic.
The character of Ian was the strong older sibling of both sets of family. His heart was hardened because of his father and he liked control. I thought that Phillips wrote his character well with how he interacted with Riley and when she wrote the scene with Ian extending an olive branch to his half siblings my heart ached for him when he was rejected. So Riley’s character had her own troubled past but she survived and she had made something for herself. She is guarded and will only let those in she trust completely. I liked that she was able to let Ian in and let herself find someone to love. I also loved it when she stood up to Ian. She wasn’t a pushover which was her mother’s fatal trait.
Ian’s father pissed me off with him having another family at the same time. I had instantly disliked him. I started to like him more as the story went on but still thought what he did was pretty shitty. Though Riley’s father tops Ian’s by a long shot. He is a very bad man that makes the situation very difficult for Riley.
So the Dare to Love series has nine books to it. Each story will feature one of the siblings and I am looking forward to reading their stories. I am reading Dare to Desire next.
Chris was the go to guy when it came to running the operation but with his personal life he was at a loss. He was especially confused when he wanted Matt but he knew that he could not share what he does for a living.
What Chris Wants is the last story to the series Edge of Honor by Lori Foster. This story was a novella and I had been looking forward to this story. I have to say it wasn’t my favorite. I think there was promise of something there but Lori Foster did not deliver on this one.
I found that the characters were not well developed. I wanted more from them, for them to have a relationship but it definitely didn’t play out that way.
One thing I liked was that Foster lets the reader know that the other couples from the books were all happy in their relationships.
Natalie loved having friends with benefits with her neighbor but soon it will change. Jett will start to want more than just sex. Natalie is not sure she wants that but she didn’t want Jett out of her life.
Ready, Set, Jett is the prologue in the series Men Who Walk the Edge of Honor by Lori Foster. This was a quick and fun story. It was less on the danger side than the other books in the series. Though there was some danger that was happening, the characters just didn’t know it was going on.
Natalie’s character did not want to get close to anyone. She had trust issues and she kept her secrets close to her. She liked Jett because it was an easy relationship, she was just using Jett for sex. I liked that Natalie was confident to do that. Though I was also happy that Natalie was discovering that she had true feelings for Jett. With Jett’s character he was a man on a mission. He wanted Natalie, but he wanted her more than friends with benefits. I liked that Jett was a take charge kind of man but he was also generous.
So I have read the rest of the series with the exception of the last book which is a novella. I will be reading that next.
